Project Updates

September 27, 2021

  • CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
  • Traffic is now traveling on both sides of the interstate through the project area.
  • Crews have substantially completed project construction for 2021. Work will resume next year (2022) on the eastbound lanes beginning west of the St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33) and ending about one mile east of Ward Creek Road (Exit 26). MDT will provide notification prior to work resuming in 2022.
  • Remaining work this fall may include miscellaneous punch-list tasks throughout the project area. This work will be intermittent and is not expected to have a major impact on traffic.
  • What to expect this fall:
    • Speed limits are expected to remain at normal interstate speeds.
    • Crews will be doing miscellaneous work at times.
    • Traffic may be reduced to one lane on occasion if crews are working. Please use caution and watch for workers along the road.
  • The Montana Department of Transportation thanks you for your patience throughout construction this summer.

Previous Updates

September 20, 2021

  • CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
  • Traffic is now traveling on both sides of the interstate through the project area.
  • Crews are expected to complete installation of signage and delineators, and add final striping in the coming weeks (depending on weather). Please use caution, follow signage, and pay attention to workers in the area. Construction is anticipated to be completed for the year by the end of September.
  • Crews will return next year (2022) to finish the final segment of the interstate. In 2022, work will resume to rejuvenate and strengthen the eastbound lanes located west of the St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33).
  • What to expect for the next couple of weeks:
    • Traffic will be reduced to one lane where crews are working.
    • Speed limits are reduced to 35 MPH through the work zone.
  • The Montana Department of Transportation thanks you for your patience throughout construction this summer.

July 28, 2021

  • CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
  • Traffic now in new configuration
  • Traffic in the project area has now shifted, with east and westbound traffic both traveling on the same side of the interstate. This change begins about two miles east of the St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33), and continues approximately eight miles to the west, ending between the Two Mile and Drexel interchanges.
    • Eastbound traffic will be able to access the Two Mile Interchange (Exit 30) as normal.
    • Westbound traffic wishing to access the Two Mile Interchange must exit at the Drexel Interchange (Exit 25) and detour back to the Two Mile Interchange from the east.
    • Traffic exiting the Two Mile Interchange wishing to travel west must travel east to the St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33) and then return westbound on I 90.
  • Please use caution, follow signage, and pay attention to workers in the area.
  • What to expect during construction:
    • Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.
    • Both east and westbound traffic will travel on the same side of I 90 between the St. Regis and Drexel interchanges.
    • Speed limits are reduced through the work zone.
    • Vehicle widths are restricted in both east and westbound directions. For the latest width restriction information, visit the MDT travel info website: https://roadreport.mdt.mt.gov/travinfomobile/
    • Wide loads must be staged and piloted through the work zone by 7 am. Call Kurt Johnston at Mountain West Holding Company between the hours of 8 a.m. & 6 p.m. for further information on passage through the project. Phone 406-490-7230.

July 23, 2021

  • New traffic patterns will begin this weekend (7/24).
  • Beginning this Saturday (7/24), new crossover patterns will be in effect through the work zone. A new pattern will begin about two miles east of the St. Regis exit (Exit 33), and continue approximately four miles to the east, ending near the Two Mile Interchange. The pattern will shift east and westbound traffic into the westbound lanes.
  • This shift will allow crews to complete work in the eastbound lanes of I 90. Please use caution, follow signage, and pay attention to workers in the area as traffic patterns and construction activities will be changing regularly (see below).
  • What to expect during construction:
    • Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.
    • Both east and westbound traffic will travel on the same side of I 90 beginning east of the St. Regis Interchange.
    • Speed limits are reduced to 35 MPH through the work zone.
    • Vehicle widths are restricted. For the latest width restriction information, visit the MDT travel info website: https://roadreport.mdt.mt.gov/travinfomobile/
    • Lane shifts will route traffic to different sides of I 90.
    • Be prepared to stop.
    • Wide loads will be staged and piloted through the work zone. Call Kurt Johnston at Mountain West Holding Company between the hours of 8 a.m. & 6 p.m. for further information on passage through the project. Phone 406-490-7230.

June 25, 2021

  • Nighttime work is expected to take place starting Sunday night (6/27).
  • Due to excessive heat forecasted over the coming weeks, a majority of work on the interstate will occur at night. The nighttime work will allow more work to be done due to the cooler temperatures, and reduce stress on workers. Construction hours may be adjusted over the summer depending on changing temperatures.
  • What's next?
Crews will not be working over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Construction will not take place between 3 p.m. on Friday, July 2 and 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 6.
  • Crews are continuing installing dowel bars in the westbound lanes to strengthen the roadway. This work is taking place between Two Mile Road (Exit 30) and Ward Creek Road (Exit 26). Watch for changing traffic patterns as crews readjust lane configurations to maximize the flow of traffic.
  • The Two Mile Road Interchange Ramp (Exit 30) is temporarily closed. Traffic will be detoured to the next closest exit.
    • • The eastbound on and off-ramps will remain open to traffic.
    • • Westbound traffic will detour to the Drexel Interchange (Exit 25), return to I 90 traveling eastbound, and exit at the Two Mile Interchange (about 9 miles).
  • What to expect during construction:
    • Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.
    • Both east and westbound traffic travel on the same side of I 90.
    • Crossover traffic patterns are in place during construction.
    • Speed limits are reduced through the work zone.
    • Vehicle widths are restricted to less than 18-feet for eastbound traffic and 14-feet for westbound traffic.
    • Wide loads will be staged and piloted through the work zone. Call Kurt Johnston at Mountain West Holding Company between the hours of 8 a.m. & 6 p.m. for further information on passage through the project. Phone 406-490-7230.

June 3, 2021

  • MDT expects heavy traffic in St. Regis this weekend (6/4-6/6) and will continue using temporary traffic signals at the Old US 10 and Montana Highway 135 intersection.
  • The traffic signals were first installed to help the flow of Memorial Day Weekend traffic. The intersection will remain operating as a four-way stop with flashing red lights until traffic reaches a high volume. Once the traffic count is high enough, the light will be activated to help move traffic through the intersection and prevent backups on the freeway ramps.
  • What's next?
Crews are continuing installing dowel bars in the westbound lanes to strengthen the roadway. Watch for changing traffic patterns on the St. Regis (Exit 33) on and off-ramps over the next several weeks. Crews will be readjusting the lane configurations to maximize the flow of traffic.
