Lola Shepard Intersection Improvement Project

Lola Shepard Intersection Improvement Project

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is planning for intersection improvements along US12 at:

  • Tricia Street/Centennial Drive (Frontage Roads)
  • Shephard Way
  • Elaine Street
  • Lola Street
  • Nicole Street

The unsignalized intersections have a high percentage of crashes. To improve safety and address increased traffic along the corridor, the goals of the project are to:

  • Improve safety for all users
  • Reduce congestion
  • Minimize impacts to adjacent properties

A number of alternatives were evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Safety: Does it address the northbound left-turn crash trend?
  • Operations: Does it accommodate future traffic volumes?
  • Access: Does it minimize impacts to business and emergency access?
  • Properties: Does it minimize impacts to adjacent properties?
  • Maintenance: What additional maintenance will be required?
  • Long-term Solution: Does it provide for long-term development?
  • Cost: Is it reasonable given the benefits?
  • Feasibility: What construction/implementation challenges exist?

Based on the analysis, the alternative moving forward into design and, ultimately, construction will be:

  • Add a new signal on US12 at Nicole Street/Shephard Way
  • Make the Tricia Street/Lola Street intersection a roundabout
  • Close access to US12 at Shephard Way, Elaine Street, Lola Street, and between Colleen and Florence Streets

Design will continue through the fall of 2021 with construction tentatively scheduled for 2022 or 2023, pending funding.
