Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) plans to conduct rehabilitation work on Secondary Highway 494 (S 494) south of Plevna . The project will begin in Plevna at the intersection of Montana Highway 12 (MT 12) with S 494, where MDT plans to apply a scrub seal and cover (similar to a chip seal), on approximately one mile of S 494. The following six miles of S 494 will be milled back to gravel to meet Fallon County standards. Additional gravel will be added where needed and four culverts will be replaced.

These changes will provide the following benefits:

  • Reduced maintenance costs.
  • Less roadway damage from large trucks and agricultural equipment.
  • Enhanced roadway safety features, including reduced speeds.

Following project completion, Fallon County will assume operations and maintenance of the gravel roadway. This will be an added benefit for both parties because the Fallon County Road Department has the capabilities to maintain and repair gravel roads. This will result in quicker response time and a more focused approach for road repair.
