Project Overview

With harsh winters and heavy summer traffic, roads in the Bitterroot take a beating. These factors are driving a pair of road improvements in the Stevensville area aimed at extending the life of the roadway while improving accessibility for both motorized and non-motorized users.

By the time a section of road shows signs of wear it’s often to late, which is why the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) invests in preventative maintenance through its Pavement Preservation Program.

Now, MDT in conjunction with Schellinger Construction and Riverside Contracting will be returning to Stevensville to chip seal the project area, which includes:

  • Eastside Highway/Main Street (S 269): from 1.2 miles south of Stevensville to 1 mile north west of town; and
  • US 93: McCalla Creek Bridge to approximately ¾ miles north of Kootenai Creek Rd.

Chip sealing is scheduled to begin in late May and will take 3-4 days. This date might change as chip sealing is extremely weather dependent because to ensure a good seal, no rain or moisture can be present. If you want to receive text updates about exactly when the chip seal will occur, text “Stevi” to 555-888.

Impacts to the Public

Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes, reduced speeds, and single-lane traffic guided by pilot cars. The chip sealing on Eastside Highway/Main Street will occur from curb to curb so parking downtown will be impacted as crews move through the area.

Respect the Cone Zone

Day or night, your safety and the safety of those around you depends on remaining “Work Zone Alert.” Always remember to slow down and pay careful attention to workers and equipment.
