Beartooth Highway Road Clearing - 2016

ATTENTION: MDT has received a number of questions and comments on the accessibility before opening day. The Beartooth Highway is currently CLOSED to ALL members of the public. This includes motorized and non-motorized (bicyclists, pedestrians, etc.) modes of travel. While clearing efforts are the most publicized activity, other work is ongoing to prepare the highway for travel season. This includes maintenance, debris clean-up, and other efforts that require heavy equipment in locations throughout the highway. This closure is for the safety of the public, and must be observed until opening day of the highway.

Crews have started clearing the 11.4 miles of snowpacked roadway on Hwy 212. The road, which closes each winter because of excessive snow and adverse winter conditions, typically opens by the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

Snow levels vary and drifts can be as high as 26 feet in the higher elevations.

MDT is responsible for the highway to the Montana/Wyoming border, where the National Park Service takes over maintenance responsibilities through Wyoming, back into Montana and into Yellowstone Park. MDT and NPS coordinate closely in keeping the road open throughout the summer.

Please check the road condition report for the most updated conditions.

A map of Beartooth highway is provided to assist with descriptions and landmarks mentioned in the videos.

Follow along each day as we post new videos and pictures of the progress!
