The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), CK May Excavating, and Riverside Contracting Inc. are continuing roadway improvement operations on the Gallatin Canyon Pavement Preservation and Safety Improvements project. Here’s what you can expect during the week of July 1.

South of Spanish Creek South

Paving operations have concluded between Storm Castle Road and the Lava Lake Trailhead, and seal and cover (chip seal) activities are expected to begin on Sunday, June 30, followed by the installation of pavement markings on Monday, July 1, weather permitting. Crews will be onsite from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. While this work is underway, traffic will be controlled by temporary signals, flaggers, and pilot cars. Drivers can expect delays, even during non-working hours. Please plan accordingly. The Gallatin River Trail turnout southeast of the Lava Lake Bridge will be closed Sunday, June 30 and Monday, July 1. Access to the Lava Lake Trail will remain open.

Work will pause on the project starting Tuesday, July 2, and resume on Monday, July 8.

Turn Bay North of Gallatin Gateway

Crews will be installing guardrail along US Highway 191 (US 191) north of Gallatin Gateway. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, a 12-foot width restriction, and single-lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers on Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, July 3, from 7 a.m. to noon. Although lanes will reopen during night hours, reduced speeds and width restrictions are in effect 24 hours a day. Please plan for delays.

Work will pause on the project at noon on Wednesday, July 3, and resume on Monday, July 8.

South of Spanish Creek South
Paving operations, rumble strip application, and signage post installation are expected on Friday, June 21 on US Highway 191 (US 191) between the Lava Lake Trailhead and Storm Castle Road. Crews will return next week to hang signage and install delineators. This work will last a few days and be conducted at night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Some sign installation operations may need to be conducted during daytime hours; however, crews will work to reduce traffic impacts during peak travel times. Drivers can expect flagger-controlled traffic flow, temporary signals, traffic control by pilot car, and delays. Please plan accordingly.

The Gallatin River Trail turnout southeast of the Lava Lake Bridge has been reopened but will be closed again during chip seal operations which are tentatively planned for the week of July 1. Access to the Lava Lake Trail will remain open.

Turn Bay North of Gallatin Gateway
Paving operations will begin on Monday on the east side of US 191 north of Gallatin Gateway. Once completed, crews will pave the remaining areas. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, a 12-foot width restriction, single-lane closures, and flagger-controlled traffic flow from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Although lanes will reopen during night hours, reduced speeds and width restrictions are in effect 24 hours a day. Please plan for extended delays.

South of Spanish Creek South
Paving operations on US Highway 191 (US 191) continue between the Lava Lake Trailhead and Storm Castle Road during night and early morning hours. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, lane closures, and 15-minute delays between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. A 12-foot width restriction is in place during working hours throughout the project area. Crews will be onsite Sunday through Friday. All work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Please note that the Gallatin River Trail turnout southeast of the Lava Lake Bridge will be closed for equipment storage during paving operations. Access to the Lava Lake Trail will remain open.

Crews continue widening operations on the east side of US 191 north of Gallatin Gateway. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, single-lane closures, a 12-foot width restriction, and flagger-controlled traffic flow from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Please plan for extended delays. South of Spanish Creek South
Milling and paving operations will take place between the Lava Lake Trailhead and Storm Castle Road beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, lane closures, and 15-minute delays between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. A 12-foot width restriction is in place through the project area during working hours. Crews will be onsite Sunday through Friday and work will last approximately two weeks. All work is weather and other unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Please note that the Gallatin River Trail turnout located by the Lava Lake Bridge will be closed for equipment storage during paving operations. Access to the Lava Lake Trail will remain open.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and CK May Excavating will pause work on the Gallatin Canyon Pavement Preservation and Safety Improvements project to observe Memorial Day.

Work will resume north of Gallatin Gateway on Tuesday, May 28, with widening operations and pipe installation. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, single-lane closures, a 12-foot width restriction, and flagger-controlled traffic flow between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. Please plan for extended delays. Although lanes will reopen during night hours, reduced speeds and width restrictions are in effect 24 hours a day.

The southern phase of this project begins on Thursday, May 30, with work on the Gallatin River Bridge near the Lava Lake Trailhead. Drivers can expect single-lane closures, traffic control, flaggers, and pilot cars. Expect extended delays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Reduced speeds and 12-ft. width restrictions are also in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

March 25-29, 2024

CK May will begin construction on US Highway 191 (US 191) near Gallatin Gateway on Monday, March 25. This portion of the Gallatin Canyon Pavement Preservation and Safety Improvements project will include adding a left-turn bay, shoulder widening, and replacing an existing bridge with a box culvert. This work is anticipated to be completed in early August.

Crews will be adding a detour to facilitate bridge replacement that will occur later this summer. During construction, drivers can expect reduced speeds and flaggers to accommodate construction equipment entering the construction area. Please plan for potential delays, be mindful of roadside crews, and travel carefully through the work zone.
