Impact attenuator replacement at Lava Lake Bridge, initially scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 5, has been delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Crews plan to conduct the replacement activities on Thursday, November 7 and Friday, November 8, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting.

While this work is underway, drivers can expect single-lane closures, flaggers, and 15-minute delays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. A 12-foot width restriction will also be in place during working hours.

Crews will return to conduct impact attenuator replacement work on the bridge near the Lava Lake Trailhead this fall. The impact attenuator is a crash cushion on the end of the bridge that reduces damage caused by a vehicle collision. Impact attenuators can also redirect vehicles away from hazards, like the river below. The impact attenuator replacement will take about three days to complete; however, a date for these activities has not been set.

Please note there will be a 12-foot width restriction in place during operational hours.

September 2-6, 2024

The last of the paving operations will occur this week on US Highway 191 (US 191) north of Gallatin Gateway. Crews will also install guardrail and temporary striping. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, a 12-foot width restriction, and single-lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Although lanes will reopen during night hours, reduced speeds and width restrictions are in effect 24 hours a day. Please plan for delays.

Seal and cover (chip seal) operations are complete and temporary striping has been placed. Chip seal needs a minimum of 30 days before permanent striping can be added to the roadway. Final striping activities will occur later this summer.

Additional bridge work on the Lava Lake Bridge, including pothole repairs and crack seal operations, will also occur later this summer. While this work is underway, drivers can expect reduced speeds, single-lane closures, and delays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Dates for this work are yet to be determined.

Paving operations have concluded between Storm Castle Road and the Lava Lake Trailhead, and seal and cover (chip seal) activities are expected to begin on Sunday, June 30, followed by the installation of pavement markings on Monday, July 1, weather permitting. Crews will be onsite from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. While this work is underway, traffic will be controlled by temporary signals, flaggers, and pilot cars. Drivers can expect delays, even during non-working hours. Please plan accordingly. The Gallatin River Trail turnout southeast of the Lava Lake Bridge will be closed Sunday, June 30 and Monday, July 1. Access to the Lava Lake Trail will remain open.

Work will pause on the project starting Tuesday, July 2, and resume on Monday, July 8.

Paving operations, rumble strip application, and signage post installation are expected on Friday, June 21 on US Highway 191 (US 191) between the Lava Lake Trailhead and Storm Castle Road. Crews will return next week to hang signage and install delineators. This work will last a few days and be conducted at night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Some sign installation operations may need to be conducted during daytime hours; however, crews will work to reduce traffic impacts during peak travel times. Drivers can expect flagger-controlled traffic flow, temporary signals, traffic control by pilot car, and delays. Please plan accordingly.

The Gallatin River Trail turnout southeast of the Lava Lake Bridge has been reopened but will be closed again during chip seal operations which are tentatively planned for the week of July 1. Access to the Lava Lake Trail will remain open.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and CK May Excavating will pause work on the Gallatin Canyon Pavement Preservation and Safety Improvements project to observe Memorial Day.

Work will resume north of Gallatin Gateway on Tuesday, May 28, with widening operations and pipe installation. Drivers can expect reduced speeds, single-lane closures, a 12-foot width restriction, and flagger-controlled traffic flow between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. Please plan for extended delays. Although lanes will reopen during night hours, reduced speeds and width restrictions are in effect 24 hours a day.

The southern phase of this project begins on Thursday, May 30, with work on the Gallatin River Bridge near the Lava Lake Trailhead. CK May will begin construction on US Highway 191 (US 191) near Gallatin Gateway on Monday, March 25. This portion of the Gallatin Canyon Pavement Preservation and Safety Improvements project will include adding a left-turn bay, shoulder widening, and replacing an existing bridge with a box culvert. This work is anticipated to be completed in early August.

Crews will be adding a detour to facilitate bridge replacement that will occur later this summer. During construction, drivers can expect reduced speeds and flaggers to accommodate construction equipment entering the construction area. Please plan for potential delays, be mindful of roadside crews, and travel carefully through the work zone.
