November 3, 2023

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Sletten Construction have the following work planned for the week of November 3. All work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.

Unger Coulee Bridge on US Highway 2 (US 2), 14 miles northwest of Glasgow.
Roadwork on the approaches to the new bridge continues.

Due to recent weather and the short time left for road construction, temporary paved approach ramps, which transition traffic from the existing paved road to the raised bridge deck, are scheduled to be installed on Tuesday, November 4.

The speed limit in the project area will remain reduced at 55 mph throughout winter. Guardrail will be installed, and there will be no width restrictions in place.

Traffic is expected to begin traveling on the new bridge the week of November 13.

Please remember to follow posted speed limits when driving through the project area and be mindful of surface transitions.

Crews will return in the spring to remove the temporary paved ramps and install the permanent paved bridge approaches.

Until traffic is traveling on the new bridge, traffic control remains in place, and motorists continue traveling on the detour. The detour has a width restriction of 24 feet. Large vehicles will be accommodated.

Work on the detour to replace Spring Creek Bridge has been paused. Construction of the detour will resume once the Butte Creek detour has been decommissioned and moved to this location. The detour width restriction will be 16 feet.

The above timelines are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen factors.

Minimal traffic disruption at all four locations is anticipated. Drivers can expect to see traffic control, reduced speed limits, and shoulder closures throughout the construction zones. Brief, single-lane road closures may be required periodically.

A motorcycle advisory is in place for all active project sites due to loose asphalt material on the detour structures. Motorcyclists are strongly encouraged to take an alternate route.

Work continues to replace four bridges on Montana Highway 248 (MT 248) in Daniels County through the Timber Bridges-Glasgow Area project. Below is the work Sletten Construction has planned for the coming week:

Drainage Bridge on Montana Highway 248 (MT 248), five miles east of Richland.
Lane Closure! Work to install the new bridge girders will begin this week. On Tuesday, May 23, the westbound lane of the detour will be closed while the bridge girders are being delivered. Flaggers will be present directing traffic.

Large trucks are encouraged to take an alternate route; however, if traveling through the construction zone is the only alternative, expect travel time delays. The crew will do their best to accommodate trucks. The detour width restriction is 22 feet.

Butte Creek Bridge on MT 248, three miles west of Scobey.
Traffic will begin using the detour on Tuesday, May 30, and demolition of the existing structure will begin. Traffic will continue to use the existing roadway until that time. The detour width restriction will be 23 feet.

Drainage Bridge on MT 248, seven miles east of Richland.
Traffic will begin using the detour on Monday, May 22, and work to replace the bridge with a 24 by 8-foot concrete culvert will begin. The detour width restriction is 16 feet.

Spring Creek Bridge on MT 248, two miles west of Four Buttes.

Remember the three Ss of work zone safety when traveling through the project sites: speed, space, and stress. Slow down when approaching work zones and follow posted speed limits. Leave adequate braking room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Keep your cool, pay attention, and plan for delays.

The recent weather has resulted in a bumpy start to construction season, but the Montana Department of Transportation and Sletten Construction are pressing forward on replacing the bridges scheduled for this year. Below is the planned construction activity for the coming week:

Drainage Bridge on Montana Highway 248 (MT 248), five miles east of Richland. (6482)
If conditions allow, crews will be on-site Saturday to make up for weather delays. Work on the detour is underway and traffic is expected to be moved onto the detour by mid-week when demolition of the current structure begins.

Butte Creek Bridge on MT 248, three miles west of Scobey (6487)

The above timelines are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen factors.

Minimal traffic disruption at both locations is anticipated. Traffic control will be on site, speed limits reduced, and shoulder closures in place throughout the construction zones. Brief, single-lane road closures may be periodically required.

A motorcycle advisory is in place for all active project sites due to loose asphalt material on the detour structures, which may pose added concerns for motorcycles. Motorcyclists are strongly encouraged to take an alternate route.
