In response to public concern regarding the lack of a guardrail on the south side of Hwy 282 over Prickly Pear Creek, MDT will be adding a new guardrail. The design addresses the public concern of vehicle safety around the curve and ensures drivers have a clear view when turning from Haab Lane onto Hwy 282.

MDT expects the work to begin this fall once they approve the plans.

MDT thanks the public for voicing their concerns and being patient as our team works through design and construction scheduling. Listening to the community and taking action reflects MDT’s people-centric vision, ensuring Montana’s transportation system is safe, resilient, and responsive to the needs of its citizens.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has received information regarding the installation of the new guardrail on the south side of Hwy 282 over Prickly Pear Creek. Materials have been ordered and work is anticipated to occur the first part of November. We will continue to keep you informed once the installation schedule has been confirmed. All work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Helena Sand & Gravel Inc. are improving the drainage structure on Highway 282, commonly known as the Montana City Frontage Road, over Prickly Pear Creek approximately 2 miles south of Montana City. Crews will be installing a large box culvert, new pavement, seal and cover (chip seal), roadside barriers, and upgraded signage. This project aims to avoid future road closures by addressing potential issues with culverts.

Construction is anticipated to begin on July 18, 2024, weather and unforeseen factors permitting.

A full road closure and detour will begin July 18 for approximately 2 weeks. This closure is between Haab Lane and Wallace Road. These intersections will remain open to access the detour routes. This website and our email and text message subscribers will be updated as information becomes available.
