Project Overview
The King Avenue West and South 64th Street West intersection in Billings has a significant crash history. Through the King Avenue & 64th Street – Billings project, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Sanbell will develop a roundabout design to address the intersection’s safety and operational concerns. A roundabout will slow traffic and reduce vehicle conflicts, while efficiently moving traffic through the intersection.
The project design is anticipated to shift the intersection to the northwest. This will reduce impacts to the existing tree line and irrigation ditches.
Field work including survey data collection, utility mapping, geotechnical investigations, and environmental activities are currently underway and will continue through the summer. In the coming months, preliminary design will progress alongside assessment of existing and future hydraulic features, like culverts and watersheds.
As the project progresses, the community will have opportunities to learn about the project, ask questions and provide feedback.
Why a roundabout?
MDT uses roundabouts to enhance safety at many intersections. Roundabouts reduce traffic delays, speeds and crashes. They are a component of MDT’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Montana roadways.
The roundabout’s circular design and one-directional traffic flow virtually eliminate the deadliest T-bone and head-on style crashes. Roundabouts also reduce rear-end crashes because traffic must slow down to enter the intersection.
