Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is partnering with Riverside Contracting Inc. to complete Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades in Lewistown. The proposed project will include ADA-compliant sidewalks, ramps, approaches, and new signage along 1st Avenue North and 1st Avenue South from Broadway Street to Upper Spring Creek Road.
Construction on the proposed ADA improvements will begin this fall and continue into 2025. To enhance safety and accessibility for all users, approximately 17 ADA corner ramps, 29 sign replacements, 26 reconstructed approaches, and more than 11,000 square feet of new sidewalks are planned.
The Lewistown ADA Upgrades project is a part of MDT’s statewide effort to improve pedestrian facilities across Montana. These improvements will bring sidewalk access into compliance with the revised ADA standards, allowing greater access for everyone.

About the Montana ADA Transition Plan
In 2021, MDT updated its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan, which directs the department’s efforts to provide an accessible transportation system within the state. Periodic updates of the plan are beneficial to ensure continuous improvement by incorporating new technologies, streamlined processes, and modernized approaches that best meet MDT’s needs and operating conditions.
The plan aims to establish a consistent approach for accommodating disabled individuals by identifying methods to assist MDT in complying with ADA regulations and removing accessibility barriers throughout the state. The plan is not intended to identify specific projects or barrier locations.
