Lola Shephard Intersection Improvement Project logo

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is designing intersection improvements along US Highway 12 (US 12) in southeast Helena at:

  • Tricia Street/Lola Street (Frontage Road)
  • US 12/Lola Street

The need for the project is due to the high frequency of crashes resulting from vehicles turning left onto the westbound lanes of US 12. The project will:

  • Enhance safety for all users.
  • Reduce congestion.
  • Minimize impacts to adjacent properties.

After extensive public involvement and consideration of operational needs, the following improvements were identified:

  • A new traffic signal on US 12 at the Lola Street intersection.
  • Widening Lola Street between Tricia Street (Frontage Road) and US 12.
  • Improved pedestrian/cyclist crossing at the signalized US 12 and Lola Street intersection to access the existing shared-use path on the north side of US 12.

Design will continue through Summer of 2028. Construction is tentatively scheduled for 2029, depending on completion of design and availability of funding.
