Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with engineering firm Sanbell, has begun the design phase of an improvement project to enhance safety features and accessibility at the intersection of Mill Street and Rabel Lane with U.S. Highway 191 (US 191)/Gallatin Road in Gallatin Gateway.

A new traffic signal will be installed to help address intersection-related crashes and operational concerns. Other improvements include adding sidewalks and sidewalk ramps that meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Planned improvements include:

  • Installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Mill Street and Rabel Lane with US 191/Gallatin Road.
  • Installing LED lighting at the intersection.
  • Widening Mill Street on the west side of the intersection to include a left turn lane.
  • Installing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps at the corners of Rabel Lane and US 191/Gallatin Road.

The map is oriented with north at the top and includes a compass rose for reference. US 191, labeled Gallatin Road, runs north–south through the center-right of the map. Mill Street runs east–west and intersects US 191 near the center of the map.
The project area is highlighted in orange along a short segment of Mill Street approaching and crossing US 191. Rabel Lane intersects Mill Street just east of US 191. Nearby streets include Bench Street north of Mill Street, Bozeman Street farther north, Webb Street to the west, Latigo Drive to the northeast, Davenport Street to the southeast, and Hargrove Loop south of Mill Street.
Key nearby landmarks shown on the map include Gallatin Gateway School southwest of the intersection, the Gallatin Gateway Community Center northwest of the intersection along Bench Street, Big Timberworks Inc. northeast of the intersection, and the United States Postal Service southeast of the intersection along Rabel Lane. A legend indicates the orange shading represents the project area.

Tentative Timeline

The project is currently in the early design phase. As part of this phase, a project open house will be scheduled for the community to learn more, share their feedback, and ask questions directly to the project team.

A date for this open house has not yet been set. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to reach out with thoughts and questions by calling the project hotline at 406-207-4484, operating Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by emailing sloaneXYZbigskypublicrelationsABCcom.

Email updates will be provided at project milestones. To subscribe to updates, please email Sloane Stinson.

A construction date for the project has not yet been scheduled.

Project Funding

The Mill Street Intersection Improvements project is being funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). The primary focus of the program is to identify locations where higher-severity crashes have occurred and prioritize work to reduce them.
