Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is improving nearly 6 miles of Interstate 90 (I-90) in the Lolo National Forest as a continuation of the I90 Lookout Pass to Taft project.
The project will remove the existing roadway surface and replace it with a concrete surface. Additional improvements will include drainage improvements and new signage, guardrail, and barrier rail. Wildlife crossing facilities will be evaluated, and bridge decks will also be repaired on structures within the project limits.
The proposed improvements will be constructed within the existing roadway width. Minor right-of-way impacts may be necessary, mainly near the two interchanges located at the beginning and end of the project limits.
Schedule
The project is currently in the design phase. Construction will likely be split into multiple phases with the first phase tentatively planned for 2028. This schedule is subject to change depending on available funding and the completion of all project development activities.
Project Location
The project begins at the Taft Interchange (Exit 5) and extends east to mile marker 11.1, just east of the Saltese Interchange (Exit 10).
Stay Informed, Stay Involved
Stakeholder and public feedback are encouraged throughout all project phases to ensure MDT identifies a solution that best meets the traffic and safety needs of the community and those who travel the roadway.
