Weekly Updates

November 30, 2021

  • The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting are pleased to announce the majority of US 2 – Hungry Horse to Stanton Creek construction is complete just in time for the holiday season. This concludes roughly 26 miles of pavement preservation work on US 2 between Hungry Horse and Stanton Creek. Crews will return in the spring to paint final roadway lines and install signage. Minor delays to the traveling public can be expected at that time.
  • In 2021, MDT enhanced 26 miles of US 2, including improvements such as roadway resurfacing through cold in-place recycling, new pavement markings to enhance visibility, upgraded guardrail, additional rumble strips, and ADA ramp sidewalk enhancements. With US 2 being a busy thoroughfare for residents, tourists, and businesses alike, it was critical MDT made these improvements before US 2 fell into more disrepair.

September 27-October 1, 2021

  • The Montana Department of Transportation continues construction on the US 2 – Hungry Horse to Stanton Creek project near Glacier National Park. Construction activities this week are very similar to last week's update.
  • Crews are working on a bridge at Moccasin Creek and are installing guardrail and barrier rail. Next week, they'll be moving to Railroad Bridge and Cascadilla Creek. Drivers can expect to see crews in different areas during the day as a result. Traffic control will be set up 24 hours a day at the bridge, so please be prepared to stop whether you are traveling during the day or at night. As a reminder, due to the bridge work, a 14-foot width restriction is now in place.
  • Later in October, the team will bring in additional crews to help move the project along before the snow comes. With their help, they will likely wrap up this year's operations by early November. Additionally, crews will plan to work on Saturday, October 9, so please prepare for minor delays if you are traveling that holiday weekend.
  • Ticketed entry is no longer in place at Glacier National Park, and we have seen an increase in local traffic on US 2 because of this change. Please continue to drive cautiously in this area. This narrow corridor does not leave much room for forgiveness. Our crews and your fellow travelers appreciate your caution.
  • This project has a staffed hotline that offers daily updates. You can reach it at 406-207-4484 weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can also email amy@bigskypublicrelations.com to receive weekly email updates, or text US2HUNGRYHORSE to 41411 to receive text updates*.

  • The Montana Department of Transportation continues construction on the US 2 – Hungry Horse to Stanton Creek project near Glacier National Park. Work has now transitioned back to primary daytime activities, with the exception of paving at the West Glacier entrance mid-next week.
  • Microsurfacing, the process of repairing pavement, is complete. Crews are now focusing on bridgework at Moccasin Creek and will be installing guardrail, barrier rail, and signage throughout the project. As a result, drivers may see crews in different areas. Please be prepared to stop whether you are traveling during the day or at night. Traffic control will be set up 24 hours a day at the bridge to ensure a safe work area.
  • Ticketed entry is no longer in place at Glacier National Park, and we expect to see an increase in local traffic because of this change. We’ve also heard of an increase in traffic on backroads, resulting in flying dust and high speeds in local communities. Please continue to drive cautiously in this area and be kind to travelers who’ve come to experience the beautiful state we call home. Many of the backroads are dead ends and will not get you to the park more quickly than US 2.

July 18-24, 2021

  • SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: We will be hosting a public Q&A regarding our current phase of work and the future of this project on Thursday, August 5 at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend and ask questions directly of the project team. To register for this webinar, visit https://bit.ly/us2qa.
  • Last week, US 2 – Hungry Horse to Stanton Creek project crews began cold-in-place recycling. This has kicked off the use of pilot cars in single-lane traffic between West Glacier and Stanton Creek. Next week, travelers can expect continued 30 minute delays when traveling between West Glacier and Stanton Creek. Work will occur between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • As a reminder, the cold-in-place recycling pavement preservation process was chosen because of its need for less trucks – something that is especially important in areas like this where we have little wiggle room. It’s a process that reuses material from the existing roadway instead of requiring new material to be brought from offsite, which is a greener footprint on the environment and results in cost-savings for the taxpayer.
  • As a reminder, this project has a staffed hotline that offers daily updates. You can reach it at 406-207-4484 weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can also email amy@bigskypublicrelations.com to receive weekly email updates, or text US2HUNGRYHORSE to 41411 to receive text updates*.

July 11-17, 2021

  • Starting next week, crews will begin cold-in-place recycling East of West Glacier. This work will require the use of pilot cars in single-lane traffic between West Glacier and Stanton Creek, and delays of 30 minutes are to be expected while crews work between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Crews will also be wrapping up concrete work in Coram early next week.
  • Cold-in-place recycling is a pavement preservation process that reuses material from the existing roadway instead of requiring new material to be brought from offsite. This process was chosen mostly due to its need for less trucks, but also because of its greener footprint on the environment and cost-savings for the taxpayer.
  • Thanks for your patience and understanding throughout this work. By being able to complete this restoration work now, we are avoiding what could have been a five-year reconstruction project later.

July 4-10, 2021

  • With temperatures reaching record highs, crews working for the Montana Department of Transportation’s (MDT) US 2 – Hungry Horse to Stanton Creek project will be starting work at 5 a.m. when temperatures are cooler. The work will continue throughout the day until 6 p.m., as it has for the past few weeks.
  • After having started concrete work in Hungry Horse and moved up the line through Coram last week, crews will now focus on concrete work and pavement patching in West Glacier. We expect crews to be done with this phase of work in the next few weeks. Single-lane traffic will continue at this time.
  • After this concrete work is complete, we will enter into a new phase of the project, which is cold-in-place recycling. This preservation process, happening East of West Glacier reuses material from the existing roadway instead of requiring new material to be brought from offsite. This work, starting mid-July, will require the use of pilot cars from West Glacier to Stanton Creek.
