The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Intermountain Construction Services are replacing two bridges and reconstructing about 1 mile of Browns Gulch Road north of Rocker in Silver Bow County.

During the week of May 13, two or three road closures, lasting about 30 minutes each, are anticipated to occur, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. These closures will allow crews time to demolish and remove rock by blasting. Once blasting is complete, crews will clear the roadway and complete safety checks, then traffic can return to its regular pattern. Most of the planned work on this project will not be completed on the roadway.

During construction, motorists can expect reduced speeds when traveling through the project area. Please follow all posted signage and be mindful of workers throughout the project area.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Intermountain Construction Services are replacing two bridges and reconstructing about 1 mile of Browns Gulch Road north of Rocker in Silver Bow County.

While a significant portion of work on this project will be completed off the current road alignment, 2 or 3 brief road closures lasting about 30 minutes each are anticipated to occur the week of May 6 to demolish and remove rock using blasting. Once blasting is complete, crews will clear the roadway and complete safety checks, then traffic can continue in the regular pattern.

Work on the new road alignment and bridges is expected to be substantially completed by November 2024, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. Crews plan to return in 2025 to apply the seal and cover (chip seal and final pavement markings, remove the old bridge structures and roadway, place wetland salvage material and fencing, and add topsoil and seeding.

During construction, motorists can expect reduced speeds when traveling through the project area.

Crews are working in the project area transplanting willows and clearing brush for the new road alignment, weather and other factors permitting.

What to expect during construction

  • Speed limits will be reduced.
  • Flaggers and/or temporary traffic signals will direct traffic at times.
  • Minor delays up to 5-10 minutes.
  • Work will take place during daylight hours.

What’s next?

The contractor will remove some rock to make space for realignment and new road structures. This work is expected to require 2-3 rounds of blasting within the project area.

  • The safety of the public and workers is MDT’s highest priority. Blasting will require Browns Gulch Road to be fully closed for about 30 minutes while the crews clean up and remove rock from the road.
  • Blasting is loud and will be heard by residents near the project area. MDT and the contractor will notify nearby residents several days in advance of blasting work.
