Construction Updates

September 9, 2020

  • Colorado Street at 4th Avenue SW will be closed intermittently through Tuesday Sept. 15th on the north side of the intersection. It will be open over the weekend. Drivers should use an alternate route to and from the hospital. Sunset Boulevard will have no construction activity and could be an alternative route. Thru traffic is still maintained along 4th Avenue SW.
  • Work is continuing along the north side of 4th Ave SW running east to west.
  • Work Zone Safety: When wet, don't forget: Let it set! Please continue to stay off wet concrete. Montana Department of Transportation appreciates your patience and time when navigating around the work zones.

Previous Updates

September 3, 2020

  • Main Street sidewalk construction is wrapping up with only landscaping yet to be completed. Crews are focused along 4th Ave SW. Some sidewalk areas will be closed while the existing is demolished and prepared for new concrete. The workflow on 4th Ave is expected to run east to west. Drivers may have to use alternate routes if side streets are briefly closed along 4th Ave SW.
  • Move it or lose it. It may not seem like it, but concrete moves. If it’s too restricted, it could crack. By allowing concrete to move ever so slightly it helps it stay looking new and the protects the things around it. During construction, we typically add small areas where it can expand and move freely near things like light poles or fire hydrants.
  • Work Zone Safety: When wet, don’t forget: Let it set! Please continue to stay off wet concrete. Montana Department of Transportation appreciates your patience and time when navigating around the work zones.
  • 8-25-2020 5th Ave SW”
Landscaping as the remaining item to complete along Main Street.

August 28, 2020

  • Sidewalk construction along Main Street is expected to be complete by Friday August 28th. Construction will move to 4th Ave SW. Traffic may be briefly closed at the side streets intersecting 4th Ave SE but no more than three consecutive intersections may be closed at a time.
  • Work Zone Safety: When wet, don’t forget: Let it set! Please continue to stay off wet concrete. Montana Department of Transportation appreciates your patience and time when navigating around the work zones.
  • Did you know sidewalk thickness under driveways is actually 50% thicker than regular sidewalk? Typically, concrete is 4 inches for sidewalk but increases to 6 inches where vehicles pass over it. If you’re driving onto property with lots of sidewalk along it, aim for where the curb levels out. That’s typically where the driveway’s thicker concrete is placed and you’ll help keep the sidewalk looking new.

August 20, 2020

  • Sidewalk construction has moved to 4th Avenue South and is expected to progress along the south side of the road, working east to west. A few corners along Main between 5th and 7th Avenue South are wrapping up. Blocks are expected to go three at a time and stay to one side of 4th Avenue South at a time. This aims to limit traffic impacts. Work is mainly contained within the shoulders but large trucks and equipment may require brief closures on the side streets. Lane shifts may be present.
  • Watch your step and save your shoes! Wet concrete may look dry when it’s not. If there are construction cones and barricades, please go around. In hot and dry weather, concrete cures fast and could ruin your shoes. Also, if it is marked while still curing, it will have to be removed and replaced.
  • Work Zone Safety: Cones and barricades help direct both drivers and pedestrians safely around construction zones. They also protect the construction workers. Please continue to abide by the barricades. We appreciate your time and patience when navigating around these zones.

  • Conrad: Sidewalk construction is focused on the west side of Main Street between 1st Avenue South and 7th Avenue South. Demo begins on 4th Avenue South. The demo is limited to three blocks at a time and to one side of the street. Drivers can expect lane shifts, possible side street closures at the intersections, and limited shoulders.
  • When Wet, Don’t Forget: Let it Set. Newly poured concrete takes time to harden and cure. How long depends on several factors such as additives in the concrete, outside temperature, and moisture. If it is marked while still curing, it will have to be removed and replaced. Please abide by closed sidewalk signs and remain off barricaded sidewalks.
  • Work Zone Safety: Utility location markers help prevent damage to utilities when digging. Hitting a utility can be dangerous. Typically, they are marked with spray paint or flags. For the safety of the construction crew and the public, please don’t move or tamper with utility markers.
  • Ever notice different colors painted on the ground after the utilities have been located? Each color represents a different utility.

  • Shelby:
Sidewalk construction continues. Work will be focused on Main Street and the Oilfield Avenue areas for the next 2 weeks. Sidewalks along Highway 2 should be complete this week. Where construction is active, crews will be demolishing, prepping, and pouring new concrete curb and sidewalk. Traffic impact should remain minimal but please exercise caution when driving near construction zones. Signs will be posted directing pedestrians around the sidewalk construction. The sidewalk areas being reconstructed are located:
    • Along Highway 2 between Adams Avenue near Shopko and 5th Avenue.
    • Along Main Street between 3rd Avenue (Division) and 1st Avenue.
    • Along Coyote Pass (Oilfield Avenue) between 5th and 7th Street North.
  • Why just these areas?
The areas selected for this project are on state routes. Montana Department of Transportation receives federal funding for this project. Typically, federal funding is issued to improve corner ramps but and very badly damaged sidewalk areas. Along the state routes, sidewalks are evaluated to determine if they meet current disability requirements, typically referred to ADA compliant. The ones that don’t meet ADA are chosen for reconstruction.

  • Did you know those little bumpy things in sidewalk ramps have a name and a purpose? These Detectable Warning Devices (DWDs) are used to alert you when you get close to the roadway. These are especially useful for wheelchairs, the visually impaired, strollers, and more. In places that get snow, you’ll typically see them made out of durable cast iron so snowplows don’t damage them.
