The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and CK May Excavating, Inc. continue work on State Secondary Highway 288 (S 288), also known as Churchill Road, between Churchill and Manhattan.

Crews plan to finish minor restoration work on the Camp Creek Bridge structure this week without impacting traffic. They will then pause activities until October, which is when they will return to place permanent epoxy striping (roadway markings).

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and CK May Excavating, Inc. continue work on State Secondary Highway 288 (S 288), also known as Churchill Road, between Churchill and Manhattan.

Crews plan to seal and cover (chip seal) the new roadway this week. Chip sealing operations will require reduced speeds and alternating single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals and pilot cars.

Traffic control will last 24 hours a day until work is complete.

Crews will work on replacing topsoil around both reconstructed curves this week, requiring reduced speeds on S 288.

LABOR DAY: Crews will pause construction activities for the Labor Day weekend by 3 p.m. on Friday, August 30 and will resume on Tuesday, September 3.

Crews will continue paving the south curve this week, requiring single-lane traffic on S 288 and reduced speeds. Crews will close Stagecoach Trail Road within the project area to facilitate paving. Travelers are advised to use the same posted detour for this temporary closure, detailed in the project map. Please slow down as you approach the detour.

Once paving is complete, crews will paint temporary roadway markings, install rumble strips, and grind bumps in the new pavement to smooth the driving surface. These operations will also require reduced speeds and single-lane traffic.

Crews will finish pouring the concrete on the north curve this week. Weather and other factors permitting, traffic will be restricted to a single lane at 35 mph on Monday.

May 3, 2024

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and CK May Excavating, Inc. are resuming work this week on State Secondary Highway 288 (S 288), also known as Churchill Road, between Churchill and Manhattan.

Irrigation work was completed earlier this spring.

This week, crews will work on the north curve, weather and other factors permitting. Scheduled work includes removing topsoil, milling, and building a minor detour around the White Ditch stockpass to prepare for culvert replacement. Construction will occur on approximately half a mile of roadway between mile markers 2 and 3. Please slow down and watch for workers on the roadway.

From 7 am to 7 pm, travel will be reduced to an alternating one-way traffic pattern controlled by flaggers. Travelers should also expect reduced speeds and a 12-foot width restriction in place until work is completed.

Work will occur on Churchill Road, between Amsterdam Road and the intersection with Meadow View Way. Two aging timber structures will be replaced with concrete box culverts, and four new culverts will be installed to ensure maximum drainage efficacy. Additional work includes installing rumble strips, upgrading signage, and updating pavement markings. Starting in July, traffic will be detoured around the Camp Creek Bridge structure via the detour shown in the project map.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and CK May Excavating have completed preliminary irrigation work on the Curves North of Churchill – Secondary 288 project.

Travelers should expect possible reduced speeds on Monday, March 25th, and Tuesday, March 26th. Work on this project will resume in late May as weather and other factors allow.
