The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) remains committed to maintaining safe and resilient roads. To this end, thank you for your patience and caution during active construction in and around Darby.
The week of June 30, MDT and Schellinger Construction will continue demolition, forming, and pouring on sidewalks located on the west side of U.S. Highway 93 (US 93)/Main Street. This work will bring sidewalks into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Meanwhile, paving on US 93 will wrap up this week. Centerline and shoulder rumble strips will be added on US 93 between Camas Creek Loop and Rye Creek Bridge in the coming weeks. During rumble strip operations, drivers will continue to be directed by pilot cars and traffic signals through one lane of traffic.
Thank you again for your patience during work zone delays. Traffic volumes have increased significantly since the start of summer, and we ask that the traveling public continue to anticipate at least a 15-minute delay when driving through the project area.
Construction is taking place Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting. Crews will pause work on Thursday, July 3 and resume on Monday, July 7.

Thank you for your continued patience during ongoing construction in and around Darby. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Schellinger Construction are diligently working on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk upgrades and U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) pavement preservation.
The week of June 23, crews will finalize sidewalk concrete work on the east side of US 93. Sidewalks on the west side will continue to undergo demolition, forming, and pouring through August, tentatively. Meanwhile, milling is complete, and paving equipment on US 93 is moving north towards the town of Darby and will continue north towards Camas Creek Loop over the coming weeks.
During paving operations, drivers continue to be directed by pilot cars and traffic signals through one lane of traffic. Please be advised, businesses and residents located on US 93/Main Street may experience vibration when paving equipment passes through town.
After paving is complete, drivers and pedestrians will notice the addition of shoulder and centerline rumble strips, crack sealing, and a full-width seal and cover (chip seal) for the length of the project.
MDT and project partners appreciate your patience during construction and pilot car wait times, especially as summer tourist traffic has increased significantly. Please anticipate at least a 15-minute delay when driving through work zones. Crews are adjusting the paving plan to mitigate delays and are actively working to improve traffic flow.

Active construction is ongoing in the Darby area. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Schellinger Construction are continuing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk upgrades and U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) pavement preservation.
The week of June 16, crews will continue work on sidewalk concrete demolition, forming, and pouring on the east side of US 93. Demolition is currently scheduled to begin on the west side in the next few weeks.
Additionally, milling and paving operations are occurring as far north as the Camas Creek Loop on US 93 and progressing through the town of Darby.
Drivers are being directed by pilot cars and traffic signals through one lane of traffic. Please be advised, businesses and residents located on US 93/Main Street may experience vibration when paving equipment passes through town.

Happy June. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Schellinger Construction are currently engaged in active construction including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk upgrades and U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) pavement preservation.
The week of June 9, drivers and pedestrians will notice crews working on sidewalk concrete demolition, forming, and pouring on the east side of US 93. In the coming weeks, crews will begin work on the west side, in phases.
This past week, crews began milling (removing material) US 93 as part of phased pavement preservation to enhance the safety and usability of the highway. Crews are currently working north of Darby on US 93 and will move up and down the highway as work progresses.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Schellinger Construction continue work on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk updates as part of the Darby North and South Pavement Preservation project.
This Friday, May 23, crews will finish work mid-day for the long weekend. No work will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.
Starting Tuesday, May 27, construction crews will continue with sidewalk concrete demolition, forming, and pouring through Darby. Drivers and pedestrians will notice active sidewalk work zones as far north as the Darby Fire Station. Wet and rainy conditions continue to cause challenges, and crews are working diligently to keep sidewalk closures as short lived as possible.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk construction continues in Darby. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Schellinger Construction, is working to ensure sidewalk repairs and upgrades move forward swiftly.
The week of May 12, crews are continuing with concrete demolition, forming, and pouring through Darby. Crews are moving north on the east side of U.S. Highway 93. Currently, crews remain in phase one of ADA sidewalk repairs and have worked as far north as Missoula Avenue.
Crews have worked diligently to make up for time lost early on due to rainfall in excavated sections of sidewalk. MDT and crew members are committed to keeping closures as short-lived as possible and appreciate your patience.
Drivers and community members may also notice sidewalk-related work, including removal and replacement of fire hydrants and lighting structures.

Recent cold and wet weather affected concrete demolition and supply schedules, which created additional work for crews. This has impacted the project’s overall construction schedule.
MDT and crew members understand that closures in front of major access points, driveways, and businesses will require a swift reopening timeline, and they will work to ensure any closures are as short-lived as possible.

Thank you for your continued patience during Americans with Disabilities Act sidewalk construction in Darby. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Schellinger Construction, is advancing the project, moving from the south end of town and working north. Sidewalk upgrades include ramp sidewalk widening, surface upgrades, and curb ramp changes.
Concrete demolition, material preparation, and concrete supply schedules have been affected by recent wet weather which has created additional work for the crews. When construction zones are filled with water, crews must first remove this water and then ensure the ground beneath the work zone is suitable and strong enough for concrete. This, therefore, sets the project schedule back. A photo example is below.
The week of April 28, sidewalk demolition and concrete pouring will continue through Darby. Crews plan to fill the dug-up sections of sidewalk with concrete as weather allows and material becomes available. Once these “open” sections are filled, crews will move to the next section of sidewalk slated for demolition.
When closing one section of sidewalk, crews will ensure access is available on the opposite side of the road. MDT and crew members understand that closures in front of major access points, driveways, and businesses will require a swift reopening timeline, and they will work to ensure any closures are as short-lived as possible.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Schellinger Construction, will tentatively begin construction on April 15 between Rye Creek Bridge and ending north of the intersection at Camas Creek Loop near Darby. Pedestrians and drivers may experience delays and detours during construction. Additionally, drivers may experience limited access to businesses and driveways prior to April 15 as a small portion of roadwork is scheduled early to mitigate delays during the summer tourist season.
Beginning mid-April, barring unforeseen weather or circumstances, crews will begin breaking ground on the south side of Darby. Crews will complete phases of ADA sidewalk upgrades including ramp sidewalk widening, surface upgrades, curb ramp changes, etc., in the following order: (1) demolition, (2) concrete pouring, (3) ADA compliance upgrades, and (4) final pavement markings. This will start on the east part of the south side of town. When closing one section of sidewalk for demolition, crews will ensure access is available on the opposite side of the road. Crews understand that closures in front of major access points, driveways, and businesses will require a swift reopening timeline, and they will work to ensure any closures are as short-lived as possible. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) in partnership with Schellinger Construction, is advancing a pavement preservation and safety project on U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) North, spanning about 13 miles between Rye Creek Bridge and ending north of the intersection at Camas Creek Loop near Darby.
This project will preserve and extend the life of the existing pavement, ensuring a more efficient roadway for the thousands of vehicles that travel this route daily. The improvements will enhance both vehicle and pedestrian safety, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance the overall driving experience for residents and visitors in the area.
Project repairs and upgrades include pavement preservation activities, turn lane enhancements, shoulder and center rumble strip additions, sidewalk updates, bridge deck sealing, and striping.
To learn more about the project, MDT is inviting the media and public to stop by at any time during an in-person open house on Wednesday, April 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Darby Community Club House (106 N Main St Darby, MT 59829).
At the events, construction and traffic control plans will be available. Team members will be on hand to answer questions. No formal presentation will be made.
Construction is expected to begin this spring, with an estimated completion date in late 2025. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting. Motorists should expect intermittent single-lane closures and reduced speeds in the work zone. Pedestrians are also encouraged to exercise caution near the work zone. Area businesses and surrounding streets will experience impacts and periodic closures due to construction. The project team will stay in close communication with those affected. Please slow down, follow traffic control, and watch for workers and equipment throughout the project area.
