Project Overview

The US Highway 191 (US 191) corridor between Bozeman and Big Sky has experienced significant traffic increases in the past several years. As a result, segments of the roadway are beginning to deteriorate and require maintenance and improvement.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is partnering with Riverside Contracting and CK May Excavating to improve the US 191 corridor this summer. This will be completed in two project phases:

• Turn Bay North, located half a mile north of Gallatin Gateway.
• South of Spanish Creek South, located north of the Lava Lake Trailhead.

Turn Bay North of Gallatin Gateway is anticipated in mid-March. Work includes a left-turn bay, shoulder widening, and replacing of an existing bridge with a box culvert. Construction is anticipated to be completed in early August.

During the Turn Bay North of Gallatin Gateway construction traffic control will be in place and drivers can expect reduced speeds, as well as a temporary detour during bridge replacement.

South of Spanish Creek South is located on US 191 between Storm Castle Road and the Lava Lake Trailhead. This phase includes pavement preservation work that will extend the service life of the roadway. Construction on this phase of the project will begin in late May and is anticipated to continue through July.

During the South of Spanish Creek South construction, drivers can expect reduced speeds, lane closures, and signal-controlled one-way traffic. Drivers are encouraged to expect delays and plan additional time to travel through the work zone. Many construction activities for this portion of the project will be conducted at night to minimize traveler impacts.
