Crews will return June 15 to complete seal and cover (chip seal) activities throughout the project area.
While chip seal work is completed, drivers can expect reduced speeds, lane closures, and pilot cars. Short delays can also be expected while waiting for the pilot car to guide traffic through the work zone.
The chip seal will need to cure for 30 days before permanent striping can be added to the roadway. Once the permanent striping is applied, this project will be finished.
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will reconstruct approximately 4 miles of US 287/US 12, east of East Helena. The new road will consist of two travel lanes in each direction, a center turn lane, improved right-turn access from Spokane Creek Road, and eight-foot shoulders throughout the project area. The roadway will be completely reconstructed, including grading, resurfacing, pavement markings, and signage.
US 287/US 12 is an important state highway for traffic between I 15 in Helena and I 90 in Three Forks and for surrounding communities. The road is being constructed to current standards to accommodate increased traffic volumes. The Highway 287 project will provide US 287/US 12 passing and turn lanes for a section of roadway beginning just east of Diehl Ranch Drive and ending just east of Spokane Creek Road. This project is in Lewis & Clark and Jefferson Counties.
Right-of-way has been acquired, and construction will begin in early 2022. Drivers can expect travel delays, gravel road surfaces, and lower speeds during construction.
