Lincoln Rd - Montana to I 15 - Construction Updates

April 24, 2023

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Helena Sand and Gravel will begin work repairing the cattle guard on the southbound Interstate 15 (I 15) ramp at the Lincoln Road interchange the week of April 24. At this time, crews will also begin implementing other pavement fixes in the project area.

When traveling through the project area, motorists should expect:

• Speeds are reduced.
• Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers.
• Occasional lane closures.
• Delays of up to 15 minutes.

MDT asks that motorists use caution and watch for changing traffic conditions when traveling through the project area.

January 4, 2022

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Helena Sand and Gravel are installing lights in the project area the week of January 2.

Due to supply chain issues, these lighting fixtures were delivered to the project team during the winter pause in construction activity. Work installing these lights is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day on Thursday, January 5.

When traveling through the project area, motorists should expect:

• Work will occur during daylight hours
• Speeds are reduced
• Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers
• Short-duration closures on the southbound off-ramp and northbound on-ramps of the Lincoln Road - I 15 interchange

November 17, 2022

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Helena Sand and Gravel have completed principal construction of the Lincoln Road project.

Improvements completed in the corridor included constructing two roundabouts, a pedestrian crossing, turn lanes on the southbound I 15 on-ramp, widening the southbound I 15 on-ramp, and adding an additional lane to the northbound I 15 off-ramp.

Crews will return next year for additional work which will include a seal and cover (chip seal), application of paint markings, and other miscellaneous tasks.

Due to supply-chain issues, the installation of lights in the project area has been delayed. Crews will be on site to install these lights as soon as they arrive from the supplier.

MDT and Helena Sand and Gravel would like to thank the Helena community, local businesses, and the traveling public for their patience throughout construction.

November 3, 2022

Helena Sand and Gravel will continue working on miscellaneous tasks this week and next. This work will include fencing, sign installation and landscaping.

It is anticipated that work will wrap up for the year in the next couple of weeks, weather permitting.

Crews will return for the installation of lighting in the project area once supplies have been delivered. This work may occur during the winter months.

The week of October 17, crews will begin work on an authorized vehicle turnaround added to this project. This turnaround is located in the center of I 15 approximately one mile south of the I 15 Lincoln Road interchange. The passing lanes for north- and southbound I 15 will be closed and speed limits will be reduced.

Lincoln Road - Montana Avenue Intersection

Work paving and pouring concrete on the roundabout legs is ongoing for the next couple of weeks. Potential nighttime closures of the southern leg of the roundabout to John G Mine Road may occur as needed. If closures do occur, a detour route using John G Mine Road and Applegate Drive will be signed.

Due to rain on September 15, a planned nighttime closure was cancelled. This closure has been moved to Monday, September 19, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. This closure includes Montana Avenue from Lincoln Road to John G Mine Road and the southbound on- and off-ramps of the Lincoln Road I 15 Interchange (Exit 200).

Additionally, any closures will be advertised ahead of time on variable message boards.

I 15 Interchange

Paving and concrete work is ongoing at the I 15 Interchange east of the roundabout on Lincoln Road. Guardrail is also being placed over the next week.

Closures of the northbound I 15 on- and off-ramps and Lincoln Road east of the interchange are currently planned for September 23, 29, and 30 from midnight to 6 a.m.

Lincoln Road - Montana Avenue Intersection

Motorists should expect intermittent nighttime closures on Montana Avenue south of the roundabout the week of September 12. A detour route using John G Mine Road and Applegate Drive will be in place when this section of road is closed.

Currently, Montana Avenue south of the roundabout will be closed on Tuesday, September 13, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

These closures will allow crews to complete more extensive paving work than if the road were to remain open.

In the daytime, motorists should expect to encounter flaggers near the roundabout.

I 15 Interchange

Intermittent nighttime closures of the I 15 interchange on- and off-ramps will occur the week of September 12. These closures will be advertised on variable message boards at I 15 exits in Helena prior to these closures.

These closures will allow crews to complete paving and paving preparation work at night. Currently, it is planned for the southbound I 15 ramps to experience closures on Wednesday, September 14, and Thursday, September 15, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The I 15 Northbound ramps will remain open.

Work to place guardrail near the I 15 interchange will also take place next week.

Crews finished paving between the roundabout and Jim Darcy Elementary last week.

This week the contractor expects to begin paving the trail, installing curb and gutter, and continue paving Lincoln Road. Crews will be working in various locations please pay attention to changing traffic patterns and watch for flaggers in the work zones.

I 15 Interchange

Crews plan to mill the I 15 northbound off-ramp the week of September 6th. This work will be done during the day and the ramp will remain open.

Lincoln Road - Montana Avenue Intersection

A detour route using John G Mine Road and Applegate Drive will be used at night. In order to complete dirt work on the south leg of the roundabout, North Montana Avenue will be closed between John G Mine Road and Lincoln Road.

This detour will remain in place the week of August 29.

Night work will continue to take place in the project area to accommodate paving. Curb and gutter work will also be taking place near the roundabout.

I 15 Interchange

Closures on the I 15 northbound on- and off-ramps will continue intermittently over the next week to accommodate paving.

Any closures of the I 15 ramps will take place at night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. All closures will be denoted on variable display boards in the area and near other I 15 exits in the Helena area.

Currently, the ramps will be closed on Aug. 23 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. An additional closure may occur later in the week.

A detour route using John G Mine Road and Applegate Drive will be used at night, starting Sunday August 21. In order to complete dirt work on the south leg of the roundabout, North Montana Avenue will be closed between John G Mine Road and Lincoln Road.

Upcoming I 15 ramp closures

The northbound on- and off-ramps at the I 15 - Lincoln Road Interchange (Exit 200) will be closed overnight from August 7 to August 10. These ramps will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night.

A 45-foot length restriction will be in place on the northbound ramps starting the evening of Aug. 7. Nighttime closures will occur intermittently throughout August within the project area. Drivers should watch for signage alerting them to changing conditions and alternate routes.

These closures are necessary in order to allow crews to complete work on these two ramps. If you live off Lincoln Road and plan on returning home after 8 p.m. on these dates, please plan ahead to use an alternate route.

MDT is currently anticipating having traffic on the Lincoln Road - Montana Avenue roundabout starting the week of Aug. 1. Though traffic will begin using the roundabout, work is still ongoing in this area and the detour route will still be partially used for the southern approach. Paving and concrete work is still underway in this area.

I 15 Interchange

Traffic will shift as work on the east end of the interchange bridge begins next week. Traffic will be single lane and controlled by traffic-sensing smart signals. Crews will begin work at the east end of the bridge and proceed east on Lincoln Road.

Paving of the northbound off-ramp will also occur next week. Dirt work will occur on the northbound on-ramp. As this work is ongoing, motorists should be alert and look for periodic shifts in traffic.

Paving is anticipated for next week on the southbound on-ramp of the I 15 interchange. Motorists should expect flaggers, traffic-sensing smart signals and delays of up to 15-minutes when traveling through the project area.

MDT asks that motorists traveling through the project area do not turn right on red in areas where traffic has been reduced to a single lane.

Following a change to the detour route, it is currently anticipated that motorists traveling through the project area will be back on the normal detour route before the end of the day on Friday, June 24, weather pending.

A small section of the detour route will be a gravel driving surface for an undetermined amount of time.

Crews are continuing concrete pouring on the roundabout and working on roundabout approaches.

I 15 Interchange

As work continues on on- and off-ramps on the I 15 interchange, drivers should expect reduced speeds, lane closures near the interchange on I 15 north and southbound, and traffic being periodically shifted between lanes.

A shift to single-lane traffic on Lincoln Road east of the interchange is expected to be in place by the end of the week of June 20. Traffic will be controlled by traffic-sensing smart signals through this stretch of the project area. This is expected to persist into fall 2022.

Lincoln Road – Montana Avenue Intersection

Crews are continuing to pour concrete on the roundabout at the intersection of Lincoln Road and Montana Avenue. This concrete work is extending out to include the roundabout approaches over the next few weeks, pending weather.

Due to the need for crews to work on the roundabout approaches, a new temporary detour route on the north side of the intersection will be implemented starting the week of June 20. The temporary detour is expected to be in place about a week to allow crews to work on the northern approach to the roundabout. Once the excavation work is done, traffic will return to using Kingpost Loop and Rustic Way as a detour.

The new detour route uses Hammer Beam Road and Roughsawn Drive to route North Montana Avenue traffic to Kingpost Loop and Rustic Way. Rather than Montana Avenue traffic turning onto Kingpost Loop directly, the detour route has been move up one block.

Access to area businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

I 15 Southbound On-ramp

As work continue on on- and off-ramps on the I 15 interchange, drivers should expect reduced speeds, lane closures near the interchange on I 15 north and southbound, and traffic being periodically shifted between lanes.

On Lincoln Road east of the I 15 interchange, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and controlled by traffic-sensing smart signals through the work zone. This single-lane traffic configuration is expected to be in place into fall 2022.

Crews are currently paving the roundabout located in the intersection of Lincoln Road and Montana Avenue. Following completion of this paving, work will begin on the roundabout approaches at which time detour traffic may shift.

I 15 Southbound On-ramp

Crews have prepped and hope to pave the southbound on-ramp the week of June 6, pending weather. Once paving begins, motorists can expect delays and flaggers on site throughout the day.

MDT expects work to begin on the northbound off ramp over the next week. Following the start of this work, motorists should expect lane closures on both northbound and southbound I 15.

Crews will be working to remove materials in preparation for paving. Motorists may see a flagger directing traffic on the ramp after the morning rush hour traffic.

Next week crews will be working to pave the shoulder and ramp, weather pending.

Lincoln Road – Montana Avenue Intersection

No major changes to traffic are expected this week through the detour area. Crews will primarily be working on the roundabout, preparing for concrete to be poured in the next few weeks. Traffic may be reduced to a single lane at times. Watch for flaggers and traffic signals while traveling in the detour area.

I 15 Lincoln Road Interchange

On I 15 near the project area, crews will soon shift from working on the interstate to working on the Exit 200 southbound on-ramp. Over the next week workers will be widening this ramp. Speed limits on the ramp are reduced to 35 mph while workers are present and 55 mph when workers are not present, such as on weekends. The right lane of southbound I 15 will remain closed near the project area.

MDT asks that motorists remain alert and drive cautiously when traveling through the project area for the safety of both the traveling public and the workers.

When traveling through the project area:

• An 11-foot width restriction is in place on Lincoln Road and the I 15 Lincoln Road interchange (Exit 200) ramps.
• Speed limits are reduced.
• Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone.
• Expect up to 15-minute delays at times through the work zone.
• Be prepared for traffic signals and speed limits to change at times.

Lincoln Road – Montana Avenue Intersection

Excavation work for the roundabout at the intersection of Lincoln Road and Montana Avenue is ongoing. Crews will be placing pipes beneath the roadway in various locations over the next week. As a result, motorists can expect more flaggers than usual directing traffic. MDT asks that motorists plan ahead and give yourself extra time through the work zone.

Southbound I 15 Ramp shoulder closure

The shoulder of the I 15 Southbound Ramp is expected to be closed the week of May 2nd depending on weather. The ramp will remain open. Speed limits on the ramp will be significantly reduced.

When traveling through the project area:

• An 11-foot width restriction is in place on Lincoln Road and the I 15 Lincoln Road interchange (Exit 200) ramps.

Work on the Lincoln Road and Montana Avenue intersection detour is complete.

Crews have completed work on a detour route around the Lincoln Road – Montana Avenue intersection.

The detour route uses Kingpost Loop and Rustic Way to direct traffic around construction at the Lincoln Road and North Montana Avenue intersection. The detour will help improve the flow of traffic around the construction zone. The detour route supports two-way traffic with traffic-sensing smart signals at the detour intersections. Traffic on the detour is being monitored and traffic signals may be adjusted as needed to keep traffic moving as efficiently as possible.

During construction, motorists can expect:

• An 11-foot width restriction will be in place on Lincoln Road and the I 15 Lincoln Road Interchange (Exit 200) ramps.
• Speed limits will be reduced.
• Up to 15-minute delays at times through the work zone.
• Access to businesses and Jim Darcy Elementary will be maintained. Motorists should be on the lookout for business access signs for direction.

Construction of the planned improvements is expected to be substantially completed this fall.

Work to construct a detour route around the North Montana Avenue/Lincoln Road intersection is expected to continue the week of April 18th. Motorists may be on the detour by the end of the week, pending weather.

Work is expected to begin on the Interstate 15 (I 15) northbound off-ramp and on a detour route around the North Montana Avenue/Lincoln Road intersection starting Monday, April 4.

Crews will began placing barrier rail on the I 15 Lincoln Road (Exit 200) northbound off-ramp. The work is expected to take place overnight from 8 p.m. - 6 a.m. on Monday, April 4th. The ramp will be closed to traffic in order to safely install the barrier.

Detour Route
A detour route using Kingpost Loop and Rustic Way will direct traffic around construction at the Lincoln Road and Montana Avenue intersection. The project is anticipated to be released for contractor bidding in January 2022. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2022.
