Frequently Asked Questions
What is the timeline for this project?
Construction will begin in early April and is expected to continue through the fall of 2024. Diamond J Construction and the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) anticipate this project being completed in one construction season, weather and other unforeseen circumstances permitting.
Where will construction begin?
Work is expected to begin on North 5th Street in early April to prepare it for use as an alternate truck route. Underground utility work is expected to begin at the intersection of North 7th Street/Montana Highway 59 (MT 59) with Main Street in mid to late April. Crews plan to complete work in four-block segments to minimize the impacts to the public as they work northward.
Who is working on the project?
This project is a joint effort between the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and other local, state, and federal resource agencies. MDT is leading work on the roadway while the city of Miles City is responsible for the underground water, sewer, and storm drain improvements. Diamond J Construction, based in Miles City, is the prime contractor for all project improvements.
Will there be a detour?
To limit traffic delays, a detour will be implemented on North 5th Street between Main Street and Williams Street. MDT and the city of Miles City identified North 5th Street as the closest alternate route to North 7th Street/MT 59 that could accommodate the same traffic volume.
Will I have to use the detour the entire duration of construction?
- Trucks will be directed to the detour on North 5th Street for the duration of construction to accommodate a wider turn radius.
- All other traffic (excluding trucks) will be advised to use the detour on North 5th Street only as needed. Outside of the four-block segments where work is occurring, traffic will be able to access North 7th Street/MT 59 throughout construction, unless otherwise specified.
Will I have access to the post office?
Access to the post office will be available throughout construction although you may need to use an alternate parking spot. For safety purposes, the United States Postal Service (USPS) drop boxes on North 7th Street will be disabled during construction. There are five other USPS drop box locations in Miles City including the courthouse and Stockman Bank.
How will this project impact businesses and residents in the area?
Business access will be maintained throughout construction although there will be times when access is temporarily limited. The project team recognizes the impact construction may have on businesses and area residents and is coordinating with them to minimize those impacts.
How is this project being funded?
Funding for this project is through the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program, administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which provides funding to states and localities for transportation improvement projects. The city of Miles City has received funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to help fund the water, sewer, and stormwater system improvements.
