October 11-15, 2021

All painting operations on the I 90 bridges near Bonner have concluded, bringing all major construction work on the Missoula Bonner and Steel Bridges project to an end.

Traffic control has been removed and all four I 90 traffic lanes are now open between Bonner and the Van Buren Street Interchange. The 12-foot width restriction has been lifted.

Crews will return next spring for additional chip sealing. This work is anticipated to last a few days with minimal impacts.

The project team knows that road construction is inconvenient, and this area has certainly seen its fair share of construction during the past few years. We are so appreciative of the community’s patience and support while we work to keep good Montana roads in good condition.

August 30 – September 3, 2021

Construction is nearly complete on the Missoula Bonner and Steel Bridge Rehab project. All lanes of traffic are currently open on I 90 between Bonner and the Van Buren Street Interchange.

The Montana Department of Transportation has determined that the newly placed chip seal on I 90's westbound passing lane, between Bonner and the Van Buren Street interchange, is not performing as guaranteed. The chip seal does have a warranty period and the contractor will reapply the chip seal next year when weather conditions are favorable to do so. The interstate continues to be safe for the traveling public.

Crews will return at the end of September to paint the permanent roadway lines on this section of I 90. This is a relatively quick process and will have minimal travel impacts.

The Steel Bridge Rehab portion of this project does not currently have a scheduled start date. More details about the timeline and necessary traffic control for these operations will be provided as soon as they are available.

July 12-16, 2021

Construction has resumed on the Missoula Bonner and Steel Bridges project. Crews have begun barrier rail removal on I 90 between the Van Buren Street interchange and East Missoula. While barrier rail replacement is completed, a permanent lane closure will be in place on the east and westbound passing lanes.

Pavement preservation work will also begin this week. Milling and paving operations will take place at night and traffic control for this work will be in place between 5 PM and 7 AM. Pavement preservation is preventative work. Just like having the oil changed on your car or seeing your doctor for a check-up, regular roadway maintenance can prevent costly repairs in the future.

We hope to keep you well informed throughout construction. If the weekly update doesn't answer all of your questions or if you would like to discuss this project further, please feel free to reach out. July 6-9, 2021

Construction will pause on the Missoula Bonner and Steel Bridges project until after the 4th of July holiday. Drivers can expect all lanes of traffic to be open through the holiday weekend.

Crews will resume construction the week of July 6 with barrier rail replacement. This work will be conducted during daylight hours between 7AM and 10PM. While this work is completed, drivers can expect reduced speeds and closure of east and westbound passing lanes on I 90 between the Van Buren Street Interchange and East Missoula.

Milling and paving operations will begin the week of July 6 as well. This work will be conducted at night between 5 PM and 7 AM. Milling consists of grinding away a portion of the paved surface of a road. Once the old surface is removed, crews lay a fresh layer of pavement. This process is called pavement preservation. Maintenance work, like pavement preservation, keeps good roads in good condition and prevents the likelihood of having to conduct significant and costly repairs later.

We hope to keep you well informed throughout construction. Construction is underway on the Missoula Bonner and Steel Bridge Rehab project.

Crews continue with crack sealing on the East and West bound lanes. Although this portion of the work will take place between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., speed reductions and lane closure will remain in place during the daytime hours. Crack sealing is anticipated to continue until mid-week.

Work on the bridge deck at exit 109 interchange is progressing as well. This work is anticipated to continue throughout the week. During this construction, a 10-foot width restriction will remain in place on the interchange. This restriction is only for the interchange and not for I 90.

Please watch for traffic control changes on the interstate and slow for the cone zone!

June 14-18, 2021

Construction is progressing on the Missoula Bonner and Steel Bridge Rehab project.

In case you missed last week’s update, here are a few highlights of what this project entails.

Beginning at the Van Buren Street interchange and continuing to Bonner, work will include pavement preservation, barrier rail replacement, and bridge rehabilitation. To minimize disruptions for the traveling public, much of this work will be conducted at night between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Although most construction operations will be conducted at night, many lane changes, such as closures or width restrictions will remain in place during daytime hours.

This week, crews will start work on crack and Mastic sealing in the East and Westbound lanes. Crews will be cleaning out cracks in the driving lanes and filling them with a heated rubber compound. This protects the pavement surface from water infiltration. This night work is anticipated to continue for the next couple of weeks.

Work will continue on the bridge deck at exit 109 interchange. Crews are performing repair work on the interchange bridge. Crews are identifying delaminated areas within the bridge deck by a process called "Chaining". Chains are drug over the concrete surface of the bridge deck in a swinging motion. This action creates a ringing sound. When the sounds becomes hollow, a delamination has been detected and can then crews can make the necessary repairs. The process allows the portions of the concrete that need repair to be addressed without the need to re-pave the entire bridge deck. While construction is completed, a 10-foot width restriction will remain in place on the interchange. This restriction is only for the interchange and not for I 90.

Please be mindful of traffic control changes on the intestate and slow for the cone zone!

We hope to keep you well informed throughout construction. If the weekly update doesn't answer all of your questions or if you would like to discuss this project further, please feel free to reach out. You may call the project hotline Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM or send an email to kristineXYZbigskypublicrelationsABCcom.
