Racetrack Bridge Removal logo

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Schellinger Construction are improving Interstate 90 (I 90) in Powell and Deer Lodge counties. The project involves reconstructing I 90 beginning just south of the Racetrack Interchange (Exit 195) and continuing south about a half mile. The east and westbound structures over the abandoned railroad bridge south of the Racetrack Interchange were also removed.

Construction on this project began in spring 2023 and was substantially completed in fall 2023. Crews will return in 2024 to seal and cover (chip seal) the roadway.

Work completed in 2023 included:

  • Removing the abandoned railroad track bridge structures south of the Racetrack Interchange (Exit 195).
  • Reducing the steepness of slopes on the side of the interstate.
  • Lowering the elevation of the roadway to be closer to the valley floor.

Why is the project needed?

This section of I 90 has a history of crashes. The steep slopes on the sides of the interstate can make these crashes very dangerous. Removing the abandoned railroad track bridges and lowering the elevation of the roadway will enhance roadway safety features through this section of interstate.

Will the interstate design change as part of this project?

While the roadway will remain in its current configuration with two lanes in each direction, the interstate was lowered by about 20 feet to be closer to the valley floor. This was done by reducing the steepness of slopes in the area and removing the abandoned railroad track bridges approximately half a mile south of the Racetrack Interchange (Exit 195).

Stay Informed During Construction

Communication with the public is important to MDT and the success of the project. The community will be notified about construction and traffic activities at key project milestones throughout the construction process. MDT will notify the public through the project website, local media, mailings, social media, and email and text notifications.

Current construction information and road conditions can be found on the MDT Travel Info App.
