What is the schedule for the project?
Construction is planned to begin on the Underpass Avenue/State Avenue and the 6th Street West/Central Avenue intersections in 2023.
Will this project help the flooding that occurs in the 6th Street Underpass?
A new stormwater drainage system and pump system is included in the project, including stormwater detention ponds on the southwest corner of the underpass.
Will the new mural be preserved?
Absolutely! The project team has been coordinating with the artist and the South Side Task Force to be sure the mural is preserved through construction.
Will the intersections or underpass be closed during construction?
There will likely be some brief, but necessary, detours while the intersections and underpass are reconstructed.
Will construction impact business access?
Access to businesses will be maintained throughout construction. Our team will coordinate with specific businesses, as necessary.
Will pedestrian and bike facilities be included in the project?
Pedestrian facilities such as lighting in the underpass and ADA crossing at the intersections are included in the project. Because the width of the railroad bridge is limited, bike lanes aren’t possible as a part of this project.
How can I get construction updates?

How is this project funded?
MDT is funding this project through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program, a flexible funding source to state and local governments for transportation projects and programs to help meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act. MDT has taken advantage of this flexibility by developing the Montana Air and Congestion Initiative (MACI) Program, which provides funding for projects and programs that reduce transportation-related emissions.
