The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT), in partnership with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), are prioritizing safety improvements on US Highway 93 (US 93).
As many are familiar, CSKT and project partners were awarded just more than $30 million of federal funding via the Nationally Significant Federal Lands and Tribal Projects (NSFLTP) grant in 2023. The Post Creek portion of US 93 is one small piece of the puzzle.
US 93 is a vital transportation corridor for many growing communities in the Flathead and Bitterroot Valleys. With increasing traffic volumes, especially during the busy summer months, the MDT Missoula District prioritizes the US 93 corridor to ensure safety for years to come. This includes the US 93 North — Post Creek Hill project.
MDT and its partners are currently in the design phase of the US 93 North — Post Creek Hill project, which will reconstruct US 93 from Red Horn Road/Dublin Gulch Road to Gunlock Road/Olsen Road, including safety and accessibility enhancements and wildlife accommodations.
Improvements Include
- Roadway widening to include 8-foot-wide shoulders.
- Constructing a northbound truck climbing lane at Post Creek Hill.
- Constructing left-turn lanes at major intersections.
- Installing a new bridge over Post Creek to facilitate wildlife movement under the highway.
- Constructing a shared-use path.
Collaboration
MDT is partnering with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) to complete the US 93 North – Post Creek Hill project. This partnership symbolizes MDT’s commitment to preserving Montana’s natural heritage and community collaboration. Recognizing the importance of clear communication and mutual understanding, MDT will work closely with stakeholders to provide updates regarding the project’s development.
MDT also recognizes the need to begin this project and is using an interactive alternative contracting method to complete the work. This process allows MDT, CSKT, and the design engineers to work with construction contractors right from the start. This will enable the project to move efficiently from the design phase to construction. Through this CM/GC method (design/build method), the project team can develop better solutions, reduce overall costs, and maintain quality while expediting delivery.
A public open house is planned to share information and allow the project team to gather feedback, answer questions, and hear the community's concerns. More information will be provided closer to the anticipated date. Please continue to check this website for these dates.
Design Team
MDT is working alongside a team of Montana-based engineering experts to develop a highly complex project. Partners include Morrison-Maierle, Inc., SK Geotechnical, Kiewit Infrastructure Corp., Krebs Corp., KLJ Engineering, and DOWL.
Construction
Construction is tentatively planned for 2027. This schedule is subject to change due to funding availability, final design completion, and other unforeseen factors.
