The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has begun rehabilitating approximately six miles of Montana Highway 287 (MT 287) from Virginia City to Alder as part of the Virginia City - West project.

This week, MDT and Riverside Contracting crews will engage in electrical work along the shoulders of MT 287 in Nevada City. They may also begin concrete sidewalk work in Virginia City, weather permitting. Neither activity will impact traffic.

Please use caution when you see workers on the roadway. These workers spend their days working a short distance from fast-moving vehicles, and while they make every effort to work safely, they are counting on you to pay attention, slow down, and be careful as you pass through a work zone.

Project improvements include upgraded guardrail on the Water Gulch Bridge, project-wide guardrail improvements, seal and cover (chip seal) operations, rumble strip installation, and new pavement markings and signage.

Pedestrian-friendly and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-accessible sidewalk and curb enhancements will be made within the limits of Virginia City. Existing boardwalks will be incorporated into all pedestrian improvements.

Some in-town approaches will be paved to reduce the amount of gravel washing out onto MT 287 and erosion of the gravel side streets. The existing parking pullout within the limits of Nevada City on the northeast side of the highway will be paved, and the parking pullout on the west end of Virginia City will be repaved to address deteriorating pavement.
