Local Government 2026 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant Applications
Supported by MDT
Winston-Northwest Project
This project will enhance safety and efficiency for travelers along the US-12/US-287 corridor northwest of Winston by adding passing lanes and improving intersections between reference posts 59.4 and 64.4.
Completing Kalispell’s Bypass for Safe Streets Downtown Project
The main goal of the proposed Project is to complete the design and construction of the Airport Road Interchange and US Highway 93 (US 93) intersection phases of the multi-phase bypass project. MDT is now in the design phase of the KBP-Basecamp Drive to Airport Road segment to widen the remaining two miles of interim roadway to a four-lane, grade separated roadway. In addition to the Airport Road interchange, the existing roadway will be widened from two- to four-lanes, adding two 12-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot paved median.
Urbanizing Alaska Road South: A Multimodal Corridor Investment Project
The project reconstructs Alaska Road South to a three-lane urban minor arterial standard, with modern roundabouts at the Cameron Bridge Road and East Valley Center Road intersections, a continuous shared-use path, and other corridor-wide safety and mobility improvements. These investments address documented crash trends, improve corridor operations, and complete a critical gap in the regional multimodal network while preparing the corridor to safely support long-term growth.
Mullan Area Infrastructure Development & Extension Project
The main goal of the proposed Project is completing remaining segments of George Elmer Drive, including the north connection to West Broadway Street (US Highway 10). Once complete, George Elmer Drive will serve as a vital north-south collector, directly connecting residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and regional transportation corridors. This connection is expected to carry significant daily traffic volumes and will meaningfully reduce pressure on Reserve Street, one of Missoula’s most congested north–south routes.
Noxon Bridge Replacement Project
The Noxon Bridge spans the Clark Fork River and serves as a critical link for the community of Noxon and surrounding areas. Constructed in 1922, the bridge has exceeded its service life and is deteriorating, making full replacement necessary.
The estimated project cost is $38 million. Sanders County is actively pursuing the funding, and this BUILD grant application seeks to secure construction funds. MDT supports the project and plans to administer the grant if awarded.
Funding secured:
- $10 million in FY26 Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) secured through the office of Senator Tim Sheehy to support preliminary engineering and environmental review.
- $950,000 secured by MDT through Montana Senate Bill 536 to assist with early project development efforts.
These funds allow the County to continue advancing design, environmental documentation, and technical analyses while pursuing all state and federal funding opportunities to move the project to construction.
Sanders County is committed to keeping the community informed the project advances. Opportunities for public input will be provided at key milestones in the project development. Project updates, schedules, and relevant documents will be provided as available.
Community input is important to ensure the replacement bridge reflects local needs and priorities. For more information or comments, please contact:
