Engineering Operations

The Engineering Operations Bureau supports the division by providing various functions related to many software systems used, project management, training and research.

Business Analysis and Project Management

The Engineering Business Analysis and Project Management section provides business analysis and project management services to facilitate division IT initiatives that improve processes and project delivery. The bureau’s project managers are responsible for identifying business needs and requirements, development and support of RFI and RFP business improvement processes, assisting with development and coordination of ITPRs, procurements and renewals, contract management, coordinating and managing project implementation teams, developing project documentation, and risk management.

Research

The Engineering Research section manages Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) Research programs that are internally driven applied research, development, and technology transfer (RD&T) programs necessary in connection with the planning, design, construction, management, and maintenance of highway, public transportation, and intermodal transportation systems. The section is responsible for leading experimental and research projects and providing knowledge transfer services that assist in agency efficiency and cost effectiveness.

MDT Research Program

Systems

The Engineering Systems Section performs functions relative to the analysis, development, management, maintenance, and support of several large and small computer systems used by MDT for the design, letting and administration of construction contracts. The section is responsible for new technology and process analysis, web application and report development, web/application server maintenance, software application upgrades, development, configuration and maintenance of CADD workspaces and help desk support.

Training

The Engineering Training section provides training and support related services for MDT. The section is responsible for assessing training needs for the Engineering Division, coordinating training events and conferences, administering training contracts and managing the training budget. The bureau’s training specialists provide statewide training and support for AASHTOWare Project software suite and Engineering Project Scheduler (EPS) and are responsible for user training, training content development, user system administration and help desk support.
