Montana’s State Freight Plan (Plan) was developed in accordance with 49 U.S. Code §70202. The plan maintains alignment with the Montana Department of Transportation’s long-range, multimodal transportation plan, TranPlanMT, and supports national multimodal freight policy and goals.
Safe and efficient movement of freight is vital to the health of Montana’s economy. The Montana Freight Plan provides a comprehensive evaluation of freight transportation within the state in addition to:
- Detailing the role freight movements play in Montana’s economy,
- Identifying significant freight system trends, needs, and issues in Montana and strategies for improvement,
- Providing a framework to guide freight-related transportation investment decisions and planned freight investment projects, and
- Informing the public and stakeholders how MDT manages the transportation system.
Update to the State Freight Plan Begins July 2025
Every four years, state departments of transportation are federally required to update their freight plan. To comply with this schedule, MDT is updating the 2022 State Freight Plan. For more information on the update, please see the 2026 Montana Freight Plan Update.
