Winter Driving Conditions
Be prepared for a gravel road surface when traveling through the project area, from 2 miles west of the Flowing Wells Rest Area, extending east for 7 miles. Remember to watch speeds, as the speed limit is reduced to 35 mph in this area.
A Motorcycle Advisory will remain in effect. Gravel surfaces may pose added concerns for motorcycles. Motorcyclists are strongly encouraged to take an alternate route.
Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is working to reconstruct nearly 37 miles of Montana Highway 200 (MT 200) between Jordan and Brockway to provide a more efficient travel experience, enhance safety features, and improve access for all users.
MT 200 was built in the early to mid-1900s and was not designed to accommodate today’s larger vehicles and higher speeds. Reconstruction will widen the roadway, add shoulders, and increase lines of sight, bringing the highway up to modern design standards.
This expansive project comprises five phases and will take several years to complete. Phase 1, Little Dry Creek, was completed in 2022, and Phase 2, Junction 462 East & West, was completed in 2023, improving 16 miles of the highway.
Highway 200 Jordan to Brockway improvements include:
- Wider roadway with 12-foot travel lanes and 6-foot shoulders
- Improved horizontal and vertical road alignment
- Rumble strips on the centerline and shoulders
- Flattened slopes on the side of the roadway
- New drainage structures and bridges
- Additional signage and striping
- Wildlife-friendly fencing in various areas
Construction Planned for 2026
Phase 3: Flowing Wells East & West
Through the Flowing Wells East & West phase of the project, MDT and contractor, Central Specialties Inc., are working to reconstruct 7 miles of MT 200, starting approximately 2 miles west of the Flowing Wells Rest Area and extending east, crossing the intersection of MT 200 with Montana Highway 24 (MT 24), a popular route for recreationists traveling to Fort Peck Lake. Work began in spring 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2026.
As part of the planned improvements for this phase, five aging timber bridges are being replaced, three of which had load postings. Load postings indicate the maximum weight that can be legally carried across a bridge for various vehicle types. Replacing these timber bridges is a crucial component of this project.
| Feature Intersected | Mile Marker | Load Posting | Replacememt Structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timber Creek Tributary | 247.4 | N/A | Culvert |
| Timber Creek Tributary | 248.9 | 4-7 Axles, 25 Tons | Bridge |
| Skull Creek | 249.7 | 4-7 Axles, 25 Tons | Bridge |
| Cemetery Coulee Tributary | 253.0 | N/A | Culvert |
| Cemetery Coulee | 253.3 | 5-7 Axles, 27 Tons | Culvert |
| NOTE: The schedule and sequence for replacing the bridges have not yet been determined. | |||
Phase 4: West of Brockway - West
Construction on phase four, the West of Brockway-West project, is scheduled to begin in spring 2026. This phase will reconstruct almost 7 miles of MT 200. It starts at the eastern edge of the Flowing Wells East & West project, approximately 14 miles west of Brockway at mile marker 253.5, and extends east to roughly 7 miles west of Brockway at mile marker 260.
Adjacent MT 24 Projects:
In addition to these projects, improvements are also planned for Montana Highway 24 (MT 24). The Flowing Wells-North and North of Flowing Wells-North projects will resurface almost 20 miles of MT 24.
Flowing Wells – North begins at the intersection of MT 200 with MT 24 at the Flowing Wells Rest Area and extends north for almost 10 miles, to just north of Shed Creek.
North of Flowing Wells - North begins at Shed Creek and extends north for almost 10 miles, ending approximately 2 miles north of McGuire Creek Road.
Improvements planned include resurfacing the roadway and upgrading pavement markings, signage, and guardrail at bridge ends, as well as resurfacing the Nelson Creek Bridge deck.
How will construction impact me?
During construction, drivers should anticipate traffic control, lane reconfigurations, and reduced speeds. Short delays of up to 15 minutes may occur.
Efforts will be made to maintain two-lane traffic whenever possible. However, to ensure safety and mobility in the work zone, one-lane traffic controlled by pilot vehicles and/or flaggers may be necessary for some construction activities.
How can I stay updated on project progress?
Project updates will be shared monthly and at key times of increased construction activity via email, webpage, and text message.
