The Median High-Tension Cable Rail project began along Interstate 90 (I-90) in the Missoula area on September 11.
Crews will begin median grading operations on Monday, September 16, and will continue through September 20 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Work will begin at the Rock Creek Road Interchange (RP 126) and will extend west for 18 miles, ending near the Bearmouth Rest Area (RP 143.6)
These operations are critical for managing environmental impacts and ensuring the stability and safety of transportation infrastructure projects. They help mitigate risks such as soil erosion, sedimentation, and structural instability.
Motorists should expect minor delays, single-lane closures, and reduced speeds when driving through active work zones. Crews will be on-site Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and occasionally on Saturdays if time is needed.
Built with safety in mind, the High-Tension Median Cable Rail project will provide a flexible barrier of steel cable mounted on steel posts in the center median. The high-tension cable rail reduces crash impact and redirects vehicles from crossing into opposing traffic. This phase includes 50 miles of median cable rail installation along I-90.
