In mid-March, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with T&S Cheff Construction, will begin tree clearing on the US 93 West of Whitefish project. This roadway reconstruction project will occur on US Highway 93 (US 93) in Whitefish, starting near the intersection with Mountainside Drive and continuing west for approximately 3 miles, ending just past Livermore Flats.
Tree clearing is necessary as it creates space for the highway reconstruction. Crews will begin work at the north end of the project corridor, near Livermore Flats, and will move south on US 93. Drivers can expect one-way traffic Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic control will be in place with pilot cars and stop signs. Reduced speeds of 35 mph and delays of up to 15 minutes are expected. Follow all posted signage and watch for workers and equipment.
Construction is scheduled to begin later this spring. All work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.
Due to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (MBTA), MDT has a specific timeframe to complete tree clearing work. MBTA prohibits the take disturbance (including killing, capturing, selling, trading, and transport) of protected migratory bird species. Their nests cannot be disturbed once they are active, which is when birds or eggs are present in the nest. An active nest can halt work and delay the project. MDT schedules activities to avoid this, which means vegetation clearing may start well in advance of construction.
Planned safety enhancements for the US 93 West of Whitefish project include a new driving surface, designated turn lanes, guardrail, wider shoulders, new signage, and a separated shared-use path with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handrails and detectable warning devices.
This important work will enhance roadway safety features and improve non-motorized accessibility in Whitefish. The goal of this project is to extend the service life of this section of US 93 so that it will continue to serve the community for years to come.
