What does the study involve?
The Vandalia Rest Area Restoration study is a multiphase approach to evaluate the future of the existing rest area. The process will involve an initial review of the current rest area and develop a design based on the preferred improvement option.
What is the process?
There are four steps in the evaluation process, described below. Public involvement opportunities will be included throughout the study process.
- Study work plan.
Members of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and the consultant design team will assess current issues and address the level of effort required to improve the facility. - Identify existing conditions.
The team will consider existing facility limitations, roadway needs, improving existing access and site distance, public input, and funding needed to operate and maintain the rest area. - Evaluate alternatives.
The team will assess two alternatives: restoring the rest area and converting it to a truck parking area. The team will assess the cost and feasibility of each alternative through facility visits, usage data review, and stakeholder and public feedback. - Design of the preferred alternative.
Once MDT selects the preferred alternative, it will move into the design phase.
How can the public provide feedback?
MDT will consider all comments submitted through this website, during a public open house, via email, and telephone. Public and stakeholder feedback is essential to screen the proposed alternatives.
