The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with the City of Kalispell and contractor Schellinger Construction, will begin construction of a single-lane roundabout at the Woodland Avenue with 2nd Street East/Conrad Drive intersection on July 21.

There will be no traffic impacts until early August, when the intersection will close and remain closed throughout construction.

Closing the area ensures faster, safer, and more efficient work within the limited project area.

Detour and alternate route signage will be in place to guide drivers around the closure. Access to nearby properties will be maintained.

Construction is expected to be fully completed in the fall of 2027.

Why a Roundabout?

After evaluating options, MDT and the City of Kalispell selected a single-lane roundabout as the best long-term solution to enhance safety and improve traffic flow. Key benefits include:

  • Enhanced intersection safety.
    • Improves visibility of oncoming vehicles from all approaches.
    • Reduces the number of vehicle conflict points.
    • Slows traffic speeds through the intersection.
  • Improved pedestrian and bicycle crossings.
    • Shorter crossing distances and fewer conflict points enhance safety and comfort.
  • More efficient traffic flow.
    • Keeps vehicles moving with fewer stops and reduced delays.
