Zoo Drive Improvements logo

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) plans to enhance safety features and improve traffic flow on the Zoo Drive corridor, in Billings. The Zoo Drive Improvements project will occur on Zoo Drive between Shiloh Road and South Frontage Road.

Planned improvements include:

  • Widening and reconfiguring Zoo Drive to a five-lane roadway with two lanes in each direction and a center turn-lane.
  • Widening and reconfiguring a section of Gabel Road between the Holiday gas station and Zoo Drive to a five-lane layout with four southbound lanes. This will include a second left-turn lane from Gabel Road onto Zoo Drive, toward Interstate 90 (I-90).
  • Intersection improvements.
  • Pavement marking modifications.
  • Traffic signal upgrades.
  • Median modifications.
  • Additional connectivity for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades.
  • Widening a segment of the eastbound I-90 ramps.

MDT is finalizing project plans and anticipates opening the project for contractor bids in February of 2025. Construction is tentatively planned to begin in 2025; however, this is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.
