Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will rehabilitate approximately 11 miles of Interstate 90 (I-90) through Bozeman Pass in Gallatin and Park counties. This project is located between the Jackson Creek Road Interchange (Exit 319) and the I-90 Business Loop Interchange (Exit 330) west of Livingston.
This project will rehabilitate this section of I-90 and make improvements to enhance the driving experience for motorists. Work will be completed in the 2025 construction season.
Improvements include:
- Removing and replacing the asphalt pavement on the shoulders, some sections of the roadway, and cattle guards on interchange ramps.
- Rehabilitating bridges by repairing and sealing bridge decks and upgrading barriers.
- Adding new shoulder rumble strips, signage and roadside markers, and upgraded guardrail.
- Applying a seal and cover (chip seal) and final pavement markings.
- Removing a potentially hazardous rock slope near Bozeman Pass.
Why is the project needed?
The shoulders of the existing roadway have deteriorated and need repairs. Additionally, potentially hazardous rock needs to be removed to prevent it from falling onto the roadway. This project will make several improvements that will preserve and extend the service life of the roadway, and address rockfall maintenance issues.
What to expect during construction
Traffic control may shift and change during construction; however, MDT anticipates that traffic will be reduced to one lane in areas where work is taking place. When construction begins, motorists can expect:
- Flaggers directing traffic at times.
- I-90 traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Reduced speed limits.
- Temporary closure of the interstate during rock removal.
- A width restriction will be in place throughout the project area when construction begins. Visit 511mt.net for the most up to date information.
Stay Informed During Construction
MDT will notify the public about traffic impacts and work activities through the project website, local media, social media, and email and text notifications during construction.
Current construction information and road conditions can be found on the MDT Travel Info App.
