Project Overview

Montana Highway 200 (MT 200) is a vital east-west route running through the center of the state, connecting small towns in the eastern plains to cities in the west, including Great Falls and Missoula. As regional traffic continues to increase, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is prioritizing enhancing the highway's drivability and safety features.

MDT and its contractor Prince, Inc. will reconstruct about 9 miles of MT 200 through the West of Jordan project. Work will start 12 miles east of Sand Springs (mile marker 192.2) and end 12 miles west of Jordan (mile marker 201).

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2025 and be completed in 2026. This schedule is subject to change due to contractor availability, weather, and other unforeseen factors.

Improvements include:

  • Widening the roadway to include 12-foot travel lanes and 5-foot shoulders.
  • Adjusting the roadway to be flatter and reduce curves.
  • Flattening slopes on the side of the roadway.
  • Improving the Big Dry Creek Bridge, including repairing the bridge deck and updating the guardrail.
  • Extending existing culverts to fit the new road width and side slopes.
  • Installing rumble strips on the centerline and shoulders.
  • Installing new signage and striping.

How will the project impact me?

During construction, drivers should anticipate traffic control, lane reconfigurations, and reduced speeds. Short delays of up to 15 minutes may occur.

Crews will maintain two-lane traffic as much as possible. However, to ensure safety in the work zone, one-lane traffic controlled by pilot vehicles and/or flaggers may be necessary for some construction activities.

Adjacent MT 200 Project: Flowing Wells East & West

In addition to the West of Jordan project, the nearby Flowing Wells East & West project will also impact MT 200 travelers. Construction of this project will begin in spring 2025 and will reconstruct just less than 7 miles of MT 200, beginning approximately 2 miles west of the Flowing Wells Rest Area and extending east past the intersection of MT 200 with Montana Highway 24 (MT 24). This project is the third phase of the five-phase Highway 200 Jordan to Brockway project that will reconstruct 37 miles of MT 200 east of Jordan. For more information, visit the project webpage.

Project progress will be shared via email, webpage, and text message monthly and at key times of increased construction activity.
