Joint fillers are standard practice when multiple sections of concrete meet. Typically these are a material made of cellular fibers that are bonded together then saturated with asphalt to aid in longevity. This material tends to be heavy and not flexible. Nomaflex is an alternative to standard concrete joint fillers. It is a polypropylene material which makes the material lighter and more flexible without losing effectiveness. Nomaflex is also easier to cut to fit specific concrete depths and variability. For the Rouse Ave – Main to Oak project, MDT decided to test this new material and evaluate it’s effectiveness as a possible alternative to standard asphalt fiber joint fillers. See below for more information from the manufacturer of Nomaflex.
