Kalispell Bypass

June 2021 - Kalispell Bypass: US Highway 93 and Basecamp Drive Intersection Study Underway

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) in partnership with KLJ Engineering are moving forward with plans to study the Basecamp Drive and US Highway 93 intersection to determine the best possible configuration for future construction plans.

Foys Lake Road Update

Construction has wrapped up for the winter on the Kalispell Bypass – Foys Lake Road Interchange project.

Drivers can now fully utilize the new bypass interchange.

LHC crews will return in 2022 to complete the finishing touches on this project. This includes the chip seal – the final layer of asphalt, the painting of final roadway lines, and streambank restoration at the Ashley Creek bridge just north of the new interchange. Warm and dry conditions are needed for much of this work.

Thank you to all for your support and understanding throughout this work. If you have any questions about this project, please email Takami at Takami@bigskypublicrelations.com or call the project hotline at 406-207-4484, operating Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Kalispell Bypass – Foys Lake Road Interchange Construction

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) began construction on the Kalispell Bypass – Foys Lake Road Interchange on March 1, 2021. Crews will be present March through November of 2021. The current roundabout configuration will be removed and replaced with a full interchange.

MDT and their partners, KLJ Engineering and LHC Construction, have engaged in months of analysis, design, and gathering public feedback to provide Flathead County with the best intersection improvement option. The existing roundabout at Foys Lake Road will be removed and replaced with an interchange consisting of an overpass and four access ramps. Two roundabouts will be constructed where the ramps intersect with Foys Lake Road. The two roundabouts will only carry local and residential traffic volumes. The Bypass will carry high-speed regional traffic over Foys Lake, reducing congestion currently in the area.

Kalispell Bypass – US 93/Basecamp Drive Study

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) in partnership with KLJ Engineering are moving forward with plans to study the Basecamp Drive and US Highway 93 intersection to determine the best possible configuration for future construction plans.

To provide a bit of background, KLJ Engineering studied the Basecamp Drive intersection in 2019 and presented potential intersection selection options to the public. These alternatives are located on the project webpage. While MDT is advancing on other intersections along this corridor, such as Foys Lake Road and Airport Road, the 2019 study identified a bottleneck traffic issue at the intersection of the Kalispell Bypass and US Highway 93. This has a ripple effect on the Basecamp Drive intersection configuration.

With this challenge in mind, MDT will proceed with an additional traffic analysis to study the Kalispell Bypass/US 93 intersection to determine the best solution for the Basecamp Drive intersection. The study will be conducted in the summer and fall of 2021 with results available towards the end of the calendar year. These results will then be used to determine suitable intersection configuration options in the coming year or two. The timeframe for construction will be determined once a design schedule and funding are determined.
