Chip seals are standard practice in Montana. They are used to protect asphalt surfaces and extend the lifetime of a roadway. MDT installs chip seals on newly paved roadways as well as older surfaces that are still in good condition. While there are good chip seal practices and specifications in place, there is always improvement available. This evaluation will compare CRS-2p and CHFRS-2p chip emulsions which are both commonly used in Montana. The results of this study will hopefully help MDT understand which application to use in certain scenarios.
